Campion School, Mumbai Review Located at Cooperage road in a bustling area of south Mumbai, Campion school was established by the Jesuits with less than 25 students. Today the school for boys has over 700 students with about 30-35 students per class. The annual board exam results are testimony to the high academic values of Campion school, with the large majority of students scoring 80% and above.
Location Campion school is located in a prime area of South Mumbai close to two major public spaces – the Cooperage soccer stadium and the Oval maidan. The nearest railway station is the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, better known as CST.
Facilities & Infrastructure The spacious classrooms all have their own projectors and special educational software on the main server enables teachers to conduct lessons with the help of the projector. Many teachers have also been given a laptop to enable them to prepare lessons. The school itself has over 100 computers. The computer lab has one computer for each student to learn not just the basics of computers but also programming skills. There is an exclusive audio-visual lab for the primary section to learn through educational software. The school library has two reading rooms & a separate library for juniors.
Other facilities include an art room, individual labs for biology, chemistry & physics subjects, and a demonstration room.
The school campus includes a large ground for sports & fun activities during the breaks.
Transport: The school has its own bus transport and has made it a rule that students cannot come into the school lane by car. Every student who travels in the school bus is given an ID card.
Academics The school is recognized by the SSC Board of Maharashtra State and by the University of Cambridge. It offers ICSE curriculum up to Std. X. Students learn Hindi from Std.I while the regional language Marathi must be taken up by all students from Std. I to Std.VIII.
While students can join various clubs (see extra-curricular activities below) certain activities are a must for all students. These include physical training, socially useful productive work, yoga, outdoor activities, music, craft and art. About two years ago the school started a unique credits program called the Jesuit Certificate Proram. Through this program, students from Std. VII to Std.X can get extra credits through extra-curricular activities.
Extra-curricular activities and campus events Campion school is highly reputed not just for its teaching faculty but also for its sports and extra-curricular activities. In fact, the school's basketball & football teams are known to bring laurels at inter-school competitions. In addition to a wide variety of sports with coaches, students can learn yoga. Elocution and quiz programs are regularly hosted. Students can also join the Junior Red Cross.
There are choral recitations, debates, quizzes, art contests & music programs in the school. School excursions are organized for various classes and there is also an annual picnic just for the staff!
Clubs: A variety of school clubs make for enjoyable activities. There are clubs for elocution, debating, dramatics and quizzes. The nature club arranges outdoor treks while the Interact club (which is associated with the Rotary club) undertakes various relief projects for the underprivileged. Other club units include Cub Scouts, N.C.C., R.S.P., etc. Students also showcase their creative skills during the annual exhibition on the school campus.
Houses: All students are members of one of the 4 houses, named Berchmans, Britto, Loyola and Xavier. There are keen contests between the 4 houses in Hindi & English debates, elocution contests, etc as well as sports such as cricket, football, lawn tennis, chess, carrom, aquatics, etc.
Annual events: There is a Campion Day every year, in honour of St. Edmund Campion, the patron saint of the school. On this day, there is no regular school. The students from Std.I to Std.X have to attend a morning mass, following which there is good deal of fun with throwball, football and basketball matches not just between the students but also between the students, teachers and parents! Prior to Campion's Day, an annual get-together dinner is arranged for students and parents.
Other annual events include sports day and an aquatics meet.
Couselling & Guidance Students can avail of the services offered by the counseling cell. In senior school, the students can get guidance on college admissions and career guidance. The school's parent-teacher association is not just a vague organization but is very much active in the administration of various activities. What's more, the school also organizes guidance workshops exclusively for parents.
Alumni The school has an alumni association known as The Old Campionites Association (OCA) through which ex-students can get in touch with each other. The OCA conducts vocational guidance talks & scholarship programs. The OCA life Membership is Rs. 3,000/-.
Alumni of Campion school include actors Rishi Kapoor & Randhir Kapoor, ace photographer Atul Kasbekar, industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla, writer & poet Dom Moraes, Union Minister Praful Patel, etc.
Campion School Mumbai fees: The exact term fees are not known, but it works out to approximately to Rs.3000/- per month.
