St Gregorious High School, Mumbai Review
Overview The St. Gregorios High School, Mumbai was initially having only nursery classes for tiny tots when it was established in 1993. Then students to Std.I were admitted a year later & from then on classes were added to its present status of being a higher secondary school. It is under the process of operating from a new campus. The school is rated highly for its teaching faculty and student-teacher relationship. There is 1 teacher for about 22 students.
As per the ICSE results of the academic year 2010-2011, 23% of the students got above 90 while 48% got between 80 & 90.
The school's Principal Ranjini Krishnaswamy has been honoured with the 2009 National Award for Teachers / Principals by The Govt. of India.
The school's Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) is very active, conducting career counseling programs for the students of Class X and workshops for students of the secondary school. Parents also volunteer for the monitoring of traffic near the school gates. The PTA has its own newsletter too. What's more, those parents who are in the medical profession organize regular health check-ups for the students and staff.
Location of St. Gregorios High School The school is located directly behind the FairLawn Housing Society, on V.N. Purav Marg at Chembur. The Diamond Garden bus stop is located nearby & the nearest railway station is that of Chembur. A famous landmark in the surrounding area is the Bombay Presidency Golf Club.
Academics at St. Gregorios High School The St. Gregorios High School imparts education from primary school to higher secondary school (up to Std.XII). The co-educational English medium school follows the I.C.S.E. curriculum and offers academic programs at the ISC level in Science, Commerce and Humanities.
The youngest students at the nursery level are taught with the Playway method, whereby the child learns at his/her own pace. There are no formal textbooks or notebooks. Great emphasis is laid on fun activities and learning how to express oneself orally.
At the next stage of education, namely the primary level, students are made aware of the environment. The emphasis is on learning with the help of a theme-based topic. Best of all, there are no formal exams! All activities are just given grades merely as a basis to assess the student's performance level.
Co-curricular and sports activities are introduced at the secondary level. At the higher secondary level, students are allowed to select optional subjects. These include learning the French language, Art and technical drawing, computer application, etc.
Infrastructure and Facilities at St. Gregorios High School As in other schools, the 5-storeyed St. Gregorios High School has science laboratories for the various science subjects and computer labs too. There is an on-campus library for all students.
As for sports, the school campus has a small stadium and a long jump pit as well as large basketball and throwball courts. Sports include volleyball, basketball, throwball, cricket, football and athletics.
Co-curricular and extra-curricular activities at St. Gregorios High School Besides the Scrabble Club, the school has a club named the St.Gregorious Interact club which was established by the Rotaract club of Deonar about 11 years ago. Students of Std.IX participate in this club's activities, which includes collecting funds through collecting old newspapers or clothers or toys, going on a clean-up drive to some location in the city, making greeting cards, singing carols during the Christmas festival, etc. Funds collected are used to give a special treat to the school staff or to provide education to poor children or to provide meals to orphans and similar other generous charitable activities. Workshops are conducted for students wherein they interact with reputed guest speakers. They also participate in quizzes and other competitive events conducted by the Rotary club.
Along with other schools, the St. Gregorios High School is a member of PEAS, an NGO which promotes environmental awareness among school students. Besides varied activities as a member of PEAS, the school also plays host to the annual regional PEAS festival.
Speaking of festivals, the annual Christmas season sees a full-fledge festival in December, incorporating carol singing contests, a Nativity play and a beautiful tableaux depicting the birth of Jesus Christ.
Unique features of the St. Gregorios High School The school accepts students with learning disabilities and are allowed to select from a range of subjects instead of studying science or mathematics. The students of the school have written the text of the eight or more books which have been published by the school. The school has established Mumbai's first ever multi-language laboratory. This learning center offers books in various languages including Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, German and French. International cultural festivals hosted in Taiwan, Korea, Switzerland, Malaysia, etc has seen the presence of St. Gregorios High School's students & faculty as official representatives of India.
