Harcourt Butler Technological Institute, Kanpur Review

About The College:

Harcourt Butler Technological Institute (HBTI), Kanpur, is an autonomous institution under GBTU, Lucknow and is ranked 24th among the top engineering colleges in India according to the Outlook India. It shows that it is better than some of the NITs (National Institute of Technology) aswell. It is the best govt. institute among the various private and govt. institutions of GBTU (Gautam Budh Technical University, Uttar Pradesh).

Selection in the college:

A candidate is able to get admission in the college through the Uttar Pradesh State Entrance Exam (UPSEE). The cut-off rank depends on the number of lower-ranked (within 1000) candidates applying. For a rough idea, a General category boy should have a rank within 1000 and a General category girl, within 2000. The college is well known for its courses in B. Tech. Chemical Engineering and various Chemical Technology branches.

About the Campus and Infrastructure:

The institute is spread across two campuses-

The East Campus (77 acres)-

The Academic Block consisting of the-
Main Academic Building, Departments of various branches, Computer Centre, Auditorium, Workshop, Central Library, canteen, girls hostels, a boys hostel (for 1st year students),etc.

The West Campus (271 acres)-

The Residential Block (containing boys hostels, faculty and staff quarters)
The two campuses are situated 3 km apart.

The infrastructure of the institution is not much pleasing. The campus is around 90 years old so you cannot expect much from it. But its not the campus that matters, its the academics of the college that matters.

Courses offered:

The institute offers a UG programme in Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech). It is among the few institutes of India which offers courses in Chemical Technology and they are Leather Technology, Food Technology, Oil Technology, Biochemical Engineering, Paint Technology and Plastic Technology. It also offers PG courses like MCA (Master of Computer Administration), M. Tech. and various doctoral programmes.
All the courses (except B. Tech Information Technology and Leather Technology) are accredited by NBA (National Board of Accreditation). Foreign universities demand for only the graduates with a degree in accredited courses, for PG courses. Hence, it is very necessary point to be considered while opting a course in any college.
The institution is autonomous i.e. the examinations are held in the college itself, along with the checking of the answer sheets and announcing of the results. It provides the students with its own degree, whereas all other institutions under the GBTU provide the degree of GBTU only.

Lab facilities:

Every department has various labs having all necessary equipment. The college has various workshop practice labs like machine workshop, carpentry workshop, welding workshop etc. well equipped with a large number of machines. Labs other than the department ones are the chemistry lab, physics lab, mathematics lab, professional communication lab, etc.

Hostel Facilities:

Hostel facilities are average if the infrastructure and facilities are to be concerned. One can predict the conditions of govt. hostels if they are built around 20-30 years back. There are three girls hostels, four boys hostels and one is under-construction. Hostels are provided with Internet LAN connections. The hostels have playgrounds for cricket, hockey, football, volleyball and also a basketball court, a lawn tennis court and a badminton court, common to all.

Transport Facilities:

The college is in the middle of the city so the conveyance is easily available to reach to the college, from any part of the city. Public transports on all routes of the city are available. There is no transport facility provided by the institution.

Co-Curricular Activities:

  • Cultural Sub-Council:

The college has a council for organizing cultural activities under the name Council Of Performing Arts (COPA). This council organises- Taal, an intra-college cultural fest and Odyssey, an inter-college cultural cum technical fest. Various cultural and technical fests of various branches are held like Incord, Mecharnival, Nirmaan, Resonance, Anuvartan etc. which gather large sponsorships from various companies and students from other colleges are invited to participate in the inter-college fest Odyssey.

  • Literary Sub-Council:

This council organises events like article writing, debates, etc. which help the students to enhance their verbal and non verbal skills in English.

  • MUN (Model United Nation) Club:

MUN Club has also been recently formed in the college. MUN is an event that copies the UNO (United Nations Organisation), where students represent different countries issues.

  • Q-Frat:

It is a quizzing federation founded by the college students themselves. It focuses on quizzing. It was formed to stimulate the quizzing activity and to give the quizzers a platform to interact with each other inside the college.

  • Photography Club:

A photography club is also present. The members hone their skills in photography by participating in the photography events organised during the various college fests.

  • Sports Sub-Council:

Facilities are provided to the students to help them excel in various sports like cricket, volleyball, table tennis, lawn tennis, football, basketball, badminton and general physical fitness. The college organises a cricket tournament named Flick, which is held every year and seeks participation of many renowned colleges across the state.

Canteen:

College has a canteen inside the campus which remains open in the college hours. The facilities are good in the canteen, apt for filling up your tummy with hygienic and fresh snacks. Another canteen is being built inside the campus with better facilities.

Library:

The college has a very large collection of books and journels in its Central Library. There are around 91000 books and 5000 journals(national and international) in the library. These books include the books of various branches as well as physics, chemistry, maths, humanities. The library remains open for the students from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on weekends. The college receives huge funds from the World Bank for the improvement of the library.

Placements:

It is the main point in this review. The placements are good ranging from a package of 3 lacs to 11 lacs, the average package in various branches are around 4-5 lacs p.a. Near about 90% of the candidates, who are eligible for the interviews, successfully get placed through the campus.
The placements of B.Tech Oil Technology, Plastic Technology, Biochemical Engineering, Leather Technology and Civil Engineering are not up to the mark, so think twice before opting for them.
Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Paint Technology courses will fetch you the highest salary package. The other courses have a decent package around 3-4 lacs .

Some of the well known government and multinational recruiters are-

IOCL(Indian Oil Corporation Limited), Dr. Reddy's Labs, HUL(Hindustan Unilever Limited), Hindalco, TATA Motors, Hero Motor Comp., Nestle, Cadbury, Adobe, Infosys, Accenture, etc.
These reputed companies make the college, a good place to get a better future in every engineering field.

Conclusion:

The college has its good-will well maintained among many of the big companies all over the country and even around the world. The college being one of the oldest colleges of the country, presently, its alumni are at major positions in both, public and private sector in the country and even around the world. Hence, only the name of the college is enough to have a secure future. I will suggest the ones getting this college should not leave it in any way. The professors, mostly, are the pass-outs of the renowned IITs and the institution itself. The level of teaching of the faculty is remarkable. The college is, hence, a good place to get the apt initial placements and strong conceptual foundations. Moreover, they get experiences in tough situations (as the students have to manage things on their own in govt. colleges). I firmly suggest it. As stated above, the college ranking is higher than many of the NITs around the country. So, one should consider it wisely.
