Indira Gandhi College Of Arts & Science, Cochin Review

Location

I joined in Indira Gandhi College in the year 2010 June for taking up B.B.A. The classes started in Mid of June. The college is Situated in a small town called Nellikuzhy which is 45 Km away from Ernakulam (Ernakulam-Munnar road). Once we get down at the bus stop we have to take a walk to the college of 1 km through the sides of a canal.

Management, Infrastructure and Timings

This college is run by a Muslim management and majority of the students here are Muslims. The main departments in the college which students opt are BBA,BCom,Bsc Computer Science. The college has PG programs in additions to UG Programs. The college has a good Computer lab with more than 50 computers. A near by canteen which also provides useful stationery items. The current Principal of the college is Prof.R.Shoukat Ali and Chairman of the college is shri K.M.Pareeth.

The college timings are from 9.50 am - 3.35 pm (4pm on fridays) with 3 breaks. How ever the timings of the college changes during the Muslim Fasting periods. The classes will be only till 2.30. Fridays Muslim students can go to near-by Mosque for prayers and the Lunch interval will be of 1 hour which is 15 minutes extra to the normal working days.

Courses and Activities

The main extra-curricular activities in the college are Arts day, College day, Sports day and an active National Service Scheme (which has many more programs in an academic year). There is a dental and engineering (only for women) college near-by. Currently there are more than 1000 students studying in IGC. New courses are added every year. The college cricket team participated in the inter college cricket tournament 2011 conducted by MG university and reached the semi-finals even though it was the colleges first venture. Students from the college participated in the inter college cross-fire debate competition in Mar Thoma college of Management and reached the finals. The NSS organizes programs like blood donation camp, NSS day, Aids day rally for educating the common people, &-day NSS camp and also provides a helping hand in any service that is to help the society. Students passing out of the college have been well placed in different reputed colleges for higher studies.

Just like many arts colleges in the state IGC also has campus politics. The classic rivalry of the major parties, KSU and SFI is also seen here. The college has both UG and PG programs. The UG programs are organized in the first three floors of the college building and the Pg classes happen in the top most floor. The college ground is situated 1 km away from the college behind the IGC dental college. The ground is mostly used by locals for playing football.

Faculty & Assessment

The BBA dept is under the control of Paul kuriakose sir. The department also has experienced teachers like Joshy sir, Meera miss, Baiju sir. The B.com dept has the services Hari and Malik sir. The college is situated near the canals of nellikuzhy and en environment which students can enjoy. But this doesn not mean that the college is not strict. Attendance is compulsory and any failure in getting 75% attendance will put in trouble. If a student take a leave for one hour in any session the whole sessions attendance will be gone. Internal exams are also to be seen with much seriousness. With the new MG university grading system often students end up not getting qualifications for higher studies. This can be avoided only if studies are taken seriously from the beginning. The two internal exams, Attendance, presentations and seminars add to your internal marks. It is calculated on the basis of 3:1 ratio with the external exams.

So join the college if you are interested in studying properly. It is not a place to fool around.
