Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Zinc Nagar, Sundergarh, Zinc Nagar Review Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya ZincNagar is situated 19 kms away west from the district head quarters of Sundergarh. This is one of the undivided districts of Odisha and second largest as per area. The district has majority of scheduled tribes and they are known for their varied heritage. One of the speciality is that these people known as Adivasis have brought fame for the state and nation for their love and ability for Hockey - our national game. The names like Padmasree Dillip Tirkey,Lazrus Barla,Ignesh Tirkey and many others are prominent.
In the district like this Navodaya Vidyalaya serves its purpose by selecting talented students across the district as early as from class V and providing quality education to the rural talents. Around 75% students are selected from rural ST/SC group and 5%seats are reserved for girls. The school is fully residential and no day scholar is allowed.
The school was established in the year 1988. It had no proper building of its own till the year 1996. After it the school is fully developed in infrastructure. The name Zincnagar exists as there were Zinc mines and the school was under the boundary of employees colony. Now the mines has been closed and only the name remains.
Under the migration policy around 15% students are given an option to migrate JNV Malhar Chhattishgarh and same number of students come too. This is done to promote national integration and mutual sharing of language and culture across the nation.
The school is affiliated to CBSE and offers education from class VI to class XII. To teach the students in the new medium all subjects are taught in Odia as the medium. From class VIII onwards English becomes the medium for all subjects except social studies which is taught in Hindi. Along with this, the mother tongue Odia is too taught upto class X.
The shool has been established by an act of Central Govt under Ministry of Human Resource Development. It provides lodging, food, uniforms and other facilities free of cost to all students up to class VIII. After that, they charge meager fee from non SC/ST boy students.
Students are selected through an open entrance test in class V from the concerned dist.
The school can be reached via buses and other local passenger vehicles available throughout the day time. The school is around 1km in from the local bus stand and no other means is available now hence one has to walk by foot.
