Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai Review

IIT Madras located nearly 20km fro the Chennai city center is one of the reputed technological institutes not only in India but in the whole world.

I would start with the very reason why the institution is famous among the masses. The two main admission tests IIT-JEE and GATE. JEE is considered to be the toughest exam at a +2 level of a student. Thus the the competitions is also that high . For every 100 students just 1 students enters IITs . Thus IITs are supposed to contain the cream layer of Indian students.

Coming to the courses, it offers many branches like
Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering,
Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Design, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical & Materials Engineering, Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering.

All these departments have B.Tech, M.Tech, M.S , PhD and Dual Degree (B.Tech+M.Tech in 5 yrs)
In addition to this the institution offers MBA, MA courses

Environment: Identifying IIT Madras in a google map is quite easy. It would be a green spot in a desert kind of area. Greenery is all over the campus. Unmarried students are only allowed to ride a bicycle to reduce pollution. Animals are not caged. We live along with them . Just imagine the world deers and black bucks will roam around us and monkeys will come into our room and take away stuff. This is IIT for U

Infrastructure : The building of many departments are old but structurally huge and well designed. There are many new buildings that are being constructed that would just surprise everyone passing by. There is a Central Library which I donno how huge it is, but huge enough to contain each and every book we think of . There is a hospital which runs 24x7. Though the doctors will not be present at night there will always be someone handle the cases. Medicines and treatment being free.

The labs are huge and contain many costly equipment, and by costly I mean worth of crores. It is very rare case when you dont find an equipment thr. The main point to be stressed is every student who wants to access the equipment can do so with some degree of permission which will be granted easily.

The new roads are of international standards which look better than those on the best national highways.Roads do not have much traffic but traffic police men are always thr to monitor the situation. The institute security is maintained by a private security system.

There are three canteens situated at different positions namely Campus Cafe , Tiffinys and gurunath (canteen + general Stores)

Sports facilities : you can play nearly everything inside the campus. There is a Chemplast Cricket ground which is used by the Indian cricket team for practice whenever they come to chennai. Leaving it there is a stadium used a cricket ground as well as Jogging path. There is a badminton/ tennis court , A football-cum-hockey court, Basket ball court and a newly coming up indoor stadium. A sportsman can have any of his wish fulfilled.

Coming to the hostel Facilities, first point would be that every room has an internet connection, which is supposed to be of 100Mbps bandwidth but never seems like it. Every old hostel has a playground which we call it as "Quadrangle" where football, hockey, volley, cricket etc will be played everyday by someone or the other. There is a Baskey court for each hostel. A TT table ,carom board, few decks of cards etc for each and every hostel. Life is joy in IIT.
Washing machines are in each floor, There is a common room where TV will be thr and any one can go and watch it (no permission from anyone). There is a computer room for those who cant afford a comp or are new to the institution (freshers). Everything I am mentioning is for a single hostel. There are 17 hostels (15 boys and 2 girls).

Festivals:
Two main festivals are Shaastra(tech.) and Saarang (Cul). Both are conducted by student bodies with least interference with administration. The bodies follow a hierarchy of Core, Coordinator, Volunteer. Shaastra is starting on 1st of this October.

Coming to more serious stuff:
The professors here work day and night in the labs and they are always open to help you whenever required. They are given accommodation within the campus facilitating the students as well as the professors.
The results are given by a Grading system where we finally get CGPA.
85% attendance is compulsory ( many professors are lenient on this rule)
Placements are at the end of 7th semester
The internet connection has memberships of many journal sites like science direct etc.

In short everything we need is at the doorstep in IIT.
