Vivekananda College, Kolkata Review Vivekananada College, Thakurpukur was established in 1950. It shifted to its present campus at Thakurpukur in 1959. The Founder-Principal of the College is Late Dr. Sushil Kumar Ray, D. Sc. Presently there are two shifts going on in the college, viz., morning shift and day shift. The college is co-educational. Presently about 5000 students, 87 teachers and 67 non-teaching employees attend the college.
Like other colleges in West Bengal, Vivekananada College also offers X+II education to the students in all three streams (Science, Commerce, Humanities). In Graduation level, all regular subjects are being taught. In addition, some new subjects like Journalism & Mass Communication, Computer Science and Film Studies have been added. The result of the students are excellent. The faculty of Zoology and the faculty of Chemistry of the College is really awe-inspiring.
The library of the College contains impressive number (more than 40,000) of books and many journals. The library is computerised and digitised. Laboratories (Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany, ICT, Computer Science) are of top standard. The canteen, a popular place for the students, has become more spacious and contains varieties of food-items and snacks. The students of the college are involved in National Service Scheme (NSS) and National Cadet Corps (NCC) activities.
The college has a spacious ground. Students take part in various activities and sports. The accessibility of the college is very good. Quality of teaching is excellent. The results are improving every year. New courses have been initiated. In addition, various vocational training is being imparted in the college through various certificate course.
Vivekananda College has now become one of the top Colleges of Kolkata.
(However, it must be remembered that Vivekananda College for Women is a different College located at Barisha.)
