Stepping Stone, Kolkata Review

I have known this school since its inception. There is a teacher teaching in this school who lives in our neighborhood. She had been hounding us to get our son admitted to this school since he turned 1. However, we did our due diligence and found the school to be one of the better ones amongst the rest in Salt Lake but it turned out to be completely opposite as our son started going to the school. We admitted our son as he turned 18 months, he reached his development stages in time if not before his peers i.e. he was walking and was fairly communicative at 18 months.

Initially, when my wife used to accompany him to his classes, she noticed that whenever he was crying, this particular teacher would react abnormally and put him in a different room which we found to be quite odd as there were other kids as well who were crying.

Soon my wife was asked to stop accompanying my son to his classes just after a week while the other kids were still being accompanied by their mothers for another week. On the other hand, my son wouldn't just stop crying during the entire length he stayed inside the school. Also, he would wake up in the middle of the night traumatized and screaming that he doesn't want to go to school. During this time, he became unwell and lost weight. We thought of giving it a pause and thought of sending him back to school after the summer vacations.

After the school reopened, my son would still not want to go to school. He could even recognize the streets and the route to the school. He would start crying if he thought that we are en route to the school. It was a harrowing experience for us but still, we continued because we were assured by the school that it is normal and he will soon settle down. We always tried to speak to the teachers and the owner of the school to understand if the things were fine as there was no CCTV like many other playschools now have. Meanwhile, this particular teacher who stays in our neighborhood kept complaining that we have spoiled the child by taking him out for walks etc. This was very difficult to comprehend for us as to how such a small child can be spoil who has not even turned two and who does not even demand anything.

Still, we took things in our stride and kept sending our son to school. One day suddenly my wife was called by the owner of the school Mrs. Mitra. She asked my wife to consult a psychologist for our kid, we told her that we see Dr. Soumitra Dutta a renowned pediatrician but he never pointed to such a thing but she insisted that we speak to him about it. Although we were quite furious as our son is quite bright but still we took him to Dr. Soumitro and explained to him the entire scenario, he said that everything is perfectly alright with our son.

We went back to school and spoke to Mrs. Mitra, we were aghast at what she said. She said that in case there could be some other problem with our son.

The problem is with this school which is still living in the stone age. They only accept demand draft for payment in today's age of online payments and various other modes of payment. They have a very close communication channel i.e a closed group on Facebook which is not very accessible, very difficult to speak to any of the teachers including Mrs. Mitra as she won't even reply on the phone. These people do not maintain any transparency, it is very difficult to trust your kids with them especially if both the parents are working. They were very biased and judgemental towards my son which we found to be quite shocking as a parent for a playschool/ Montessori, even though we maintained a very open attitude towards them.

I would not recommend this school to parents who are working. It is alright if one of the parents can keep a put outside the school while your kid is inside. We are exploring legal options against the owners of the school for harassment and torture.
