University Institute of Engineering and Technology, Chandigarh Review
Overview University Institute of Engineering and Technology, Chandigarh, commonly known by people as UIET or simply UIT, is comparatively a new engineering government college as compared to other popular engineering institutions in and around Chandigarh. Since its first block was established in 2002 by then HRD union minister, it is still expanding and trying its best to become better day by day. Currently, it has 3 blocks and is spread over 10.5 acres in the Panjab University South Campus.
As the time for admission came after 12th standard, I started searching for good government colleges in and around Punjab, especially Chandigarh. Engineering aspirants usually set a goal for B.E. Computer Science and Engineering in Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh. But since its cut-offs are too high, the second option after that is UIET. UIET is not so much popular in Punjab, especially because firstly, it's only 17 years since it was established and secondly, Punjab has a number of top private engineering institutions such as Thapar University, Patiala. Even I did not know about it earlier until someone told me about it when I did not get admission in PEC. UIET is famous more among the students of Bihar, Jharkhand, UP and Madhya Pradesh. Yes, believe it or not, 50% of the students in this new institution are from these states (50% means approximate 1500 students) and 30% of the students are localities and the rest 20% are from Punjab.
Note that with regard to rankings and achievements, the biggest institution of PU has been awarded Design and Innovation Centre (DIC), which is currently awarded to only 29 engineering institutions of the country (most of them IITs). This means if you are good at making projects, you will be funded by the Central Government for all of your projects. UIET secures its name among the top 50 engineering institutions of the country.
The Campus In terms of infrastructure, its buildings are old (I mean they need renovation and need to be painted). We as students feel that space is less; instead of three floors in each block, more blocks could have been constructed because it has lots of empty space lying around it. The classrooms are not at all looked after, washrooms are dirty, classroom balconies have heaps of dust lying on them for years. A few of the classrooms have ACs and projectors. The labs are small and averagely maintained. Coming to sports, it currently has only a volleyball and a basketball court, two grounds and lots of empty space where you can play cricket. But since UIET is in Panjab University, you do not really need to be worried about sports as PU has an international level sports ground, cricket ground, swimming pool, shooting range, hockey ground, football ground, etc. Name a sports game and you will find it in PU. As for the library, this government institution's library is better than anyone could imagine. It is fully AC, has loads and loads of books, has a large seating capacity and machine automated books issue and return system. Also, a separate 24 hours reading room is open to students outside the library. Also, PU's A.C. Joshi Library is the biggest in Punjab, so we prefer to go there and study rather than UIET. I mean PU's library is the best.
UIET does not have its own auditorium, so it uses the Law Auditorium for big functions. For small functions and activities like seminars, it has a seminar room and it is really good.
The Courses and Faculty Coming to academics, B.E CSE and IT are the best. I mean students of CSE and IT have earned a lot of rewards at the national level. B.E Electronics and Communication and B.E. Electrical are good, B.E. Mechanical is not really good. B.E. Biotechnology is a rare course in engineering institutes and UIET has it. The faculty of CSE and IT is really good. Rest of the faculty is average and a lot of vacancies are lying in UIET which is a major problem. M.Tech courses are also good and M.Tech students get a stipend of Rs 15000/-. A lot of PhD courses are also there, but I really don't know much about them.
Placement Average job package at UIET is 6-7 lakhs. Students get a package as high as 22 lakhs and as low as 3.5 lakhs, usually depending on the type of student but most of the students do get placed. CSE and IT placements rock whereas other stream placements are not so good.
Activities Coming to extra-curricular activities, you will get the best of them here. Every day you will get a new opportunity, a new seminar, a new sports competition, new debate competition and every type of competition you can imagine, even as Anime quiz! Yes, though this institution is new, it has approximate 10-15 clubs of its own and 20-30 clubs of Panjab University. To name a few, theatre club (known as Osmium), debating society (Debsoc), photography club (Imagen), alumni society (STAR), social work club (Mitra), dance and music club, Rotaract and lots of more. So I am damn sure, you will really enjoy this college.
Conclusion Though it is not the best right now, it is better than the private ones and will become the best in the upcoming years for sure. And the best part is, it is part of the Panjab University campus. So, you are going to get lots of fun and entertainment here.
