Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Ludhiana Review

The Campus

Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College is spread over a sprawling area of 86 acres, with the biggest campus among the colleges in and around Ludhiana region. It is very beautiful with different and unique types of trees and flowers all over the campus.

GNDEC has various kinds of sports grounds (cricket ground, football ground, athletics ground, etc.), smaller playgrounds & a number of gardens, an auditorium, swimming pool, bank, dispensary, post office, open-air theatre, and Gymnasium hall complex. There is ample parking space available for about 200-300 two & four-wheelers. The auditorium is old, not the best but good enough and has a seating capacity for more than 1,000 people. The sports grounds are well maintained and large enough to conduct state-level sports contests. The department buildings need renovation as they are very old and not maintained well. The college has only two canteens which are relatively expensive and the hostel mess is closed for non-hosteliers. FM Radio Station has been set up in the campus after sanction by the Government of India for the education of the general public. The holy Gurduwara Sahib is also present on the campus for gaining the blessings of God.

There are three hostels for boys and one for girls with a total accommodation of about 1200 students. The hostels provide all the basic amenities to students. The college used to have the best infrastructure among the colleges of Punjab in the 1980s but over the years, the campus infrastructure has not been taken care of much.

GNDEC has different departments for each engineering branch and the oldest department is the mechanical department. The Mechanical Department has various kinds of workshops and all the old and advanced machines to impart the best hand-on training to students.

College crowd

Since the college is run by the Nankana Sahib Education Trust (NSET) which is under the aegis of Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee, Amritsar, so you will mostly see Sikh students in the campus. The college consists of mostly students from rural areas around Ludhiana. There is no visible discipline in the college and you will see most of the students roaming around the campus rather than sitting in the classrooms. The seniors are humble and helpful to juniors and ragging is strictly prohibited in the campus premise. So, the college provides a home-like environment for rural students.

Annual Fest

GNDEC holds its biggest event, the college fest every year. The college fest has no particular name with the fest being given a new name every year. The students conduct the fest which consists of a variety of events such as dance and music competitions, coding competitions, acting performances and much more. Students from various regions of Punjab participate in the fest with full zeal and zest.

Placements

The salary packages have continuously fallen over the years with no scope of revival according to the current scenario. Average placement packages are 4-5 lakhs per annum and a few students are able to score packages of 10 lakhs per annum. Most of the students either go for higher studies or join government jobs.

Alumni

You will see the graduates from GNDEC everywhere at top positions in companies in and around Ludhiana. Once the best college of Punjab, Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College has produced many notable alumni who currently hold the seniormost positions in large MNCs around the globe.

Conclusion

Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College used to be one of the most recognized colleges of northern India at a time. It used to be the best engineering college of Punjab in the 20th century and students used to work really hard just to get admission in GNDEC but after the college changed its affiliation from Panjab University Chandigarh to IK Gujrat Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar, the standards of college have significantly fallen with most people forgetting the existence of GNDEC. Still, the college remains heaven for the rural students of Ludhiana and imparts knowledge to thousands of students daily. The college has the utmost potential to rise and shine and with a few improvements, the college can bring back its golden era.
