University Institute Of Chemical Engineering And Technology, Chandigarh Review

Overview

When it comes to engineering, most of the students go for Computer Science and Engineering, IT, Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Civil Engineering. Most of the people even do not know the meaning of Chemical Engineering and what happens in it. Chemical engineering is offered in a few institutes and there are rare engineering institutes in which chemical engineering is the major course. Well, Dr SSB University Institute of Chemical Engineering (Dr SSB UICET), popularly known as UICET is one of them. It was the first Institute to be established in Panjab University, Chandigarh in independent India. A few decades back, this prestigious Institute was the number one chemical institute in the country but now, with chemical engineering becoming less preferable among students and more and more engineering institutes being established, the Institute's ranking has slipped below but still, it is among the top 15 chemical institutes of India.

Infrastructure

The Department of Chemical Engineering is spread over a vast area at the center of North Campus of Panjab University, Chandigarh. The two-storeyed buildings painted in red and white colour offer a number of laboratories equipped with the latest types of equipment, a large number of lecture halls, library, auditorium, playgrounds and many more. The auditorium is good but can be better as per the standards of the Institute. The lush green campus is wi-fi enabled.

The buildings are about 5-6 decades old and need renovation. The campus can be much better according to the funding received by the Institute.

Courses

Currently, UICET is famous for its B.E Chemical Engineering course. The problem is, the JEE rank holders having ranking even about 1,30,000 are being admitted to this course (though the seats in the course are 100 only), justifying the falling standards of the institute and students preferring other engineering branches over chemical engineering. UICET offers many other courses such as B.E Food Technology, Integrated 5-year Chemical-MBA course, etc.

College Crowd

Well, it is difficult to get anywhere as healthy and fruitful environment as it is in UICET. Seniors are very helpful and humble to the juniors. The faculty is friendly and caring.

Annual Fest

Cyanide is the annual fest of UICET. It is a 3-day event consisting of various competitions and activities such as dance & music competitions, coding contests, debates, quizzes, etc. The annual fest has not been able to attract many gatherings over the years, but still, it is a 3-day break from complex engineering books for the students.

Placements

Once upon a time, the Institute used to be the highest preferred institute for placements among the companies and the students here used to bad the highest salary packages in the country. But now, the Institute is struggling to get good companies drawn to the campus for placements, with mostly older companies like Reliance recruit most of the students. The average salary package is around 4-6 lakhs, with the highest package around 10-15 lakhs.

Fee Structure

If I would say that the annual fee of each course is Rs 20,000/- per annum, would you believe me? But yes, UICET is one of the cheapest engineering institutes of India (I think no engineering institute can be cheaper than this in India). UICET comes under TEQIP, that is, the whole funding of the Institute is done by World Bank. Be it infrastructure, course fee, the competitions in which students take part, everything is funded by World Bank.

Conclusion

Dr SSB University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology is obviously one of the best chemical engineering institutes in the region. But its standards have been falling significantly over the past few years. If we think of the fact that UICET's major funding is done by the World Bank and the Institute is about 60 years old, its obvious that the Institute has the capability to offer much more to the students and the country.
