National Institute of Technology Silchar's aim and vision is “ To produce Quality manpower, equipped with human and social values that required to integrate excellent technical skills, social character, leadership, creativity and innovation for Development of India and to promote research in the emerging disciplines" .
It was formed as a ‘Regional engineering College' in 1967 and upgraded as ‘National Institute of Technology' in 2002. The Director of the Institute is Prof . P.K.Bose.
NITS is Situated on a breath taking location, Its spread over 2.43 kilometers .It is surrounded by beautiful greenery and hill rocks. It is situated on the banks of river Barak. NIT silchar is the No. 1 among all NIIt's and IIT's in India in Infrastructure. And Comes behind IIT-B and IIT-D in overall ranking in India according to DQ ratings.

The Institutes Computing facility includes high end work stations and Intel Pentium based Personal Computers. Each faculty members are provided with a desktop having internet connection, students In hostels are also provided Computers with Internet.
Transportation to the institute is available by Air ( Air India operates daily flights between Silchar and Kolkatta, also direct flights to Silchar from Guwahati.Silchar Airport is at Kumbhigram and local buses and taxis are available directly), train (trains between silchar and Guwahati are available and rest of the country via Lumding, daily trains exists, Silchar railway station is situated at the center of the city) and road (Silchar has a road link with Guwahati Via shilling, Lot of Deluxe Buses and Taxis are available to Guwahati from silchar ).
