About the school Established in 1984, the Holy Cross Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Valasaravakkam, Chennai has a spacious campus. The co-educational school follows the State Board curriculum and has a plethora of co-curricular and extracurricular activities.
Infrastructure and facilities The 35,000 sq.ft school building of Holy Cross Matriculation Higher Secondary School has large classrooms and separate washrooms for boys & girls. Students are introduced to computer technology in the air-conditioned 900 sq.ft computer lab having 25 systems. An audio-visual room with a large-screen LCD colour TV is used to show educational videos. The science labs for Physics, Chemistry and Biology are well-maintained, as is the large library which is open to the students for both reading & studying purposes. Outdoor and indoor areas are available for games and sports, with a separate play area inside for the toddlers in the kindergarten classes.
The aforementioned play area for KG children has safe equipment, including slides & see-saws. Story boards, colourful pictures, puzzles and blocks and other play items keep the children engaged during their hours at school.
Language skills are developed through informal lessons, poetry sessions, drama, debates, etc. for which there is a special language lab.
Co-curricular & Extracurricular activities Interesting field trips are organized for students of Holy Cross Matriculation Higher Secondary School, such as one to a biscuit factory and another to a local hospital for a Retinopathy project.
Since 2015, the school has a very active Interact Club which was set up in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Madras North. Projects to create awareness about protecting the environment, maintaining good dental hygiene, water harvesting procedures, etc are some of the activities in which students (Class 6 onward) are involved through this club. Scouts and Guides is also included.
Students are also directly involved in organizing events on the occasion of various festivals and national days. For example, on Republic Day and on Independence Day there are traditional dances, aerobics, etc after the flag hoisting & march-past. The students dress in traditional clothes on the occasion of Pongal, at which time they take part in a tug of war & other fun activities. For Christmas, the children get gifts from 'Santa Claus' who is none other than one of the staff & Christmas carols are sung by the school children.
Unique features The Holy Cross Matriculation Higher Secondary School has teachers conducting evening classes to help children improve their handwriting. To develop reading skills, the class teacher puts keywords on a subject each week and there is a collective reading session by the class every Friday. Special coaching is given to a student who scores below the average marks of 60% in a subject. English and Tamil language coaching is provided as well.
Admission process For admission to the Holy Cross Matriculation Higher Secondary School, an application form has to be filled up & submitted at the school office. The school does not admit students based on recommendations, but only on the basis of merit as per the scores (50% and above) in a written test and after an interview. Children seeking admission to pre-kindergarten classes and up to Std.5 do not have to appear for the written test.
