School details: Crescent School, Chennai is a residential school only for boys. Started in 1968, sponsored by Seethakathi Trust, the school follows the Tamil Nadu State Education Board's curriculum and in the higher secondary classes offers IGCSE and A level courses. The medium of instruction is English and students can choose between Tamil, Hindi and Arabic for their section language option at the secondary school level.
Academics With each class limited to 25 students, individual attention for each is ensured at Crescent School, Chennai. The different school levels are:
- Class V to VII: In these classes, students are at the Lower Secondary level. In addition to the main curriculum subjects, students attend classes in Physical education, GK, drawing and painting and Life oriented education. Once a year students have to work on a project in different subjects. Educative field trips are organized too.
- Class VIII to X: In these classes, students are at the Secondary level. They can opt between: (i) The State Board' Matriculation curriculum with subjects of: English, Maths, Physical science, Biology, History, Geography and a second language; (ii) IGCSE / ‘O' curriculum with subjects of: English, Maths, Physical science, Biology, Computer studies, Economics, Islamiyat and a second language.
- Class XI and XII: In these classes, students are at the Higher Secondary level. They can opt between: (i) The Tamilnadu State Higher Secondary curriculum with a course of study that includes: Part I - Either Tamil or Hindi or Arabic; Part II – English; Part III - Optional Subjects: Group A – Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology / Computer Science / Communicative English; Group B – Accountancy, Commerce, Economics & Business Mathematics / Computer Science / Communicative English. (ii) The ‘AS' & 'A' Level curriculum of University of Cambridge with these options: Engineering stream - English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry; Business stream - English, Accounting, Business Studies, Economics.
Infrastructure and facilities The campus of Crescent School has a spacious playing field for football, cricket and athletics. There are courts to enjoy a game of tennis or badminton, basketball or football. The traditional game of Kho-Kho too is played. Indoors, facilities for table tennis, chess and carom are available. The students must learn swimming in the campus swimming pool. Coaching from qualified people in the various sports has given good results in various competitions at both the State and District level. A Physical Education test analyzes the boys' skills in the various sports and grades are given for the performance.
Being a residential school, Crescent school has a hostel with dormitory-type accommodation in a large hall. Each student has a bed, table & chair and a cupboard. Each resident tutor is in charge of two dormitories, his responsibility being to ensure the health and general welfare of the boys, talking with them about personal problems too. He also organizes organizes activities for them in collaboration with the Deputy Hostel Warden of the school. Indoor games and fun activities are organized in the recreation hall. Senior boys have semi-private rooms.
Meals are served in a large dining hall, with non-vegetarian food served in the mess. All arrangements are under the charge of a Mess Supervisor.
On site is a hospital with 10 beds, with an RMO (Resident Medical Officer) and two qualified Resident Nurses available 24x7.
Other Facilities include a library from where the boys can borrow books, well equipped science labs, a computer center, an Internet lab for browsing, etc.
Admission processParents can obtain the application form for admission to Crescent School, Chennai from the school Principal. The ward's name, date of birth and class to which admission is sought should be mentioned. The application fee can be paid in the form of a Demand Draft or a money order or cash. There is a registration fee of Rs.2000/- (this fee will not be refunded.) There is an entrance test for admission. Based on the scores of the entrance test, parents & their wards have to attend an interview. The final selection for admission to the school will then be done based on merit. Foreign students can also apply for admission, for which certain documents need to be submitted, such as transfer certificate, pass certificate, etc.
