About Government G.V. Raja Sports School
Established in 1975 and named after Lt. Col. P. R. Godha Varma Raja, G.V. Raja Sports School, Thiruvananthapuram is a Government co-ed school under the administration of the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs. The most well known alumni of the school are international athletes Shiny Wilson and K.M. Beenamol, as also the national hockey team's former captain P.R. Sreejesh.
Academics The school offers admission to students in Class 6 and 7 and on the basis of the student's skills in a certain sport and provides training in that specific sport from Class 8 onward. While the school is well-known for nurturing sporting talent, on the academic side, the school offers the State Board's curriculum with students of Class 10 appearing for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) exam.
Students of Class 11 and 12 follow the Vocational Higher Secondary Education (VHSE) of the State Education Board. Currently, there are about 390 students on the rolls, with 270 at the High School level and 120 at the VHSE level.
On campus Students of G.V. Raja Sports School, Thiruvananthapuram stay on campus with separate hostel accommodation for boys and girls. There are computer and science labs, a library and canteen serving nutritious food, in addition to the training facilities for sports coaching and a gym. The sports facilities include a synthetic outdoor track for track and field athletics' events, a hockey field and nets for practicing cricket. Indoor courts for badminton and for indoor games are also available. More infrastructure is on the cards in the upcoming new building.
Admission process The Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs generally schedules a talent hunt each year, to identify budding sports talent. Athletics, football, basketball, volleyball, hockey, cricket, wrestling, judo, boxing, weightlifting, and taekwondo are the various events in which the children can participate and showcase their sporting skills. Based on the performance, students will get admission to G.V. Raja Sports School, Thiruvananthapuram and undergo training with a focus on a special sports discipline as per their interest and skills. These students are provided with free education and sports training, as well as campus accommodation and food.
