Land and the Climate

Austria is double the size of the neighbouring country Switzerland, wedged between the seven countries. There are five natural regions in Austria:

Three climatic regions meet in Austria, the Atlantic or the marine west coast type of climate is found in Northern Austria. It has moist summers and mild rainy winters that are cool. Mediterranean climate type is found in Southern Austria with hot dry summers and mild rainy winters. Hot summers and cold winters of the continental climate are found in the Eastern Austria. Lifestyle

Brief history of Austria

During the early Iron Age people in Austria mined and traded salt. These are evident from the discovery of the burial grounds at Hallstatt. The Celts were the first invaders of Austria. By A.D 10 the Romans occupied the regions and became complete rulers. One of the camps of Romans Vindobona developed into the city of Vienna. Until World War I Austria was largely ruled by dynasty, the Habsburgs. In 700's the king of the Franks Charlemagne occupied Austria. In 976 the north eastern Austria was conquered by Babenberg. In 1042 King Ottoman took control of the Austrian territory after the death of last Babenberg. In 1500's the Ottoman Empire invaded Austria and in 1600's they are defeated. In 1916 the Protestants in Bohemia revolted against Habsburg emperor starting Thirty years war. In 1648 the Thirty years war was ended due to the Peace of Westphalia. Habsburg declared Roman Catholicism, as the official Austrian region. In 1814 Austria declares war and is defeated by Italian and French forces. In 1967 Dual Monarch of Austria -Hungary was established and in 1914 the Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated and the world war began. In 1918 the last Habsburg Emperor was overthrown and Austria became a republic. German troops under the leadership of Adolf Hitler capture Austria, in 1954 due to world war Austrian territory gets divided and in 1954 the four major powers end their occupation of Austria. In 1955 Austria joins the European Union.
