About Jordan

The country Jordan depends largely on the foreign aid and on the economy of the Middle East for its development, its economy is based on free enterprise. The neighbouring oil producing Arab countries provides work for large number of Jordanians and they send money to their families in Jordan. The largest part of the economy comes from the service industries which employ about 70% of the country's workers. The government employs many service workers while others work in different sectors such as banking, education, insurance trade, tourism and transportation. The Jordan's government maintains large armed forces which has many people working for the defense area. Due to its large defense force, Jordan is burdened with heavy cost for its maintenance of armed forces.
The nation consists of very few natural resources such as phosphate and potash mines and the region lacks the oil deposits found in other countries. Jordan has only one dam that produces electricity to meet the demands of energy, and thus imports it from other countries. Jordan's land is covered with deserts and thus farming is only about 3%. The nation has large plants which include cement factories, ceramics, cigarettes, petroleum refinery, food products, pharmaceutical products, shoes, textiles and detergents.
Farmers grow citrus fruits and vegetables using modern farming methods and on the river valley grains such as barley, wheat and other fruits, vegetables and nuts are produced. Good transportation systems prevail in Jordan with paved highways linking the country to all its neighbors. Jordan has only one port the Al Aquabah to handle the cargo.

Geography and the People of Jordan

Jordan has a beautiful landscape with varied regions of deserts, mountains, deep valleys and the rolling plains. The country is divided into three regions:

The Jordan River Valley-It consists of a narrow and deep valley which is a part of Great rift Valley. It extends along the River Jordan from the Sea of Galilee to the Dead Sea. The land is unsuitable for farming as the Jordan River receives less rainfall. The country uses an irrigation system with latest methods of farming to grow fruits and vegetables by using the plastic covered hothouses. This has made the river valley an agricultural area.

The Transjordan plateau is a wedge shaped plateau, which are cut by dry valleys. The wedge shaped plateau begins at Jordan's northern border, and narrows southward to the region around Maan. Found in this area are the Jordan's largest cities

The Syrian Desert lies in the east and south of the plateau. This is the major region which is hot and dry, this desert covers much of the Arabian Peninsula.
Most of the people live in the fertile high plateau, where native Jordanians Arabs live. There are also few ethnic groups such as Armenian Christians and Circassian Muslims and Palestinian Arabs living in this region. During Arab-Isreali wars, most of the Palestinians fled to Jordan as refuges and others moved from the West Bank to the Capital City of Amman. Majority of Jordanians are Muslims and they are orthodox or Sunni. Jordanian's life is greatly affected by the religion Islam. The Muslims pray five times a day, fast, give alms to the poor, attend a mosque and take a pilgrimage to the land of Mecca in Saudi Arabia which is a sacred city. Most of the Jordanians live in the towns and cities, all the houses and apartments are provided with electricity and water facilities. Compared to other developing countries the people of Jordan lead a better lifestyle. The houses in the villages of Jordan are made of mud and stone or concrete. Villagers grow crops, raise goats or work in construction or mining.
Jordan is an urban society with many nomadic people settling after 1950's in rural or in towns. About 5% of Jordan's are the Arab nomads called the Bedouins. These nomads live in tents and roam in the desert with their camels and sheep in search of water and pasture. The dress of Jordan are the western clothing, women wear long loose fitting dresses. Men cover their heads with a cloth called kaffiyeh. Rural Jordanians wear traditional robes and they are very social people. They enjoy getting together and eat variety of food which includes cheese, flat bread, rice vegetables and yogurt.
The popular food is chicken, lamb cooked in yogurt and served on large tray of rice. This traditional Jordanian dish is called the mansaf. The dish symbolizes Jordanians hospitality. The dish is influenced by Bedouin culture. The dish is eaten on several different occasions of celebrations funerals, weddings and holidays. The dish consists of a plate of rice with meat boiled in thick yogurt. It is sprayed with herbs and pine nuts. The dish is eaten with hands and fresh fruit is served at the end of Jordanian meal. Jordanians drink coffee and tea flavored with nana on every occasion. Many number of popular Arabic rock bands are dominating in the Arab World. The most popular sport is football; there is great improvement of football at the national level. In 2016 Jordan hosted the FIFA U-17, women's world cup. The first women's sports tournament in the Middle East. Jordan is the founder member for Organization of Islamic cooperation the Arab League. Admission Process in Jordan

The applicants must be fluent in English/ Arabic and provide proof for language proficiency. Application dates for masters and diploma courses: Late June-early July of each year: applications are accepted for the fall semester.
Applications are accepted during November for winter semester. Applications are accepted during Feb-March for medicine which starts on July 1st each year.

If you are going to study in Jordan you need to get a student visa. To get a student visa you need to file an application with Jordan Ministry of the interior of annual Residence Permit for studying in Jordanian Universities.

University of Jordan

King Abdullah University Hospital

The hospital is largest in Northern Jordan. It was named after the founder of Transjordan Abdullah I Bin al-Hussein. The university is affiliated to Jordan University of science and technology. It is also a teaching hospital with full time physicians and surgeons. The hospital has a bed capacity of 683. The hospital consists of patient clinic, emergency department, pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology, internal medicine, dermatology, cardiac center, physiology, therapy and rehabilitation. The JUST faculty of medicine the second in Jordan was established in 1984 in Yarmouk University in Northern city of Irbid. The faculty is associated with king Abdullah university hospital. Hashemite University

This university is one of the Jordanian state run universities. The university was established in 1995 and is located close to the city of Zarqa. The university is the first to apply for two summer semester system. It offers different masters programs. It allows for international admission program. The university consists sof 19 colleges, faculties of –engineering, science, arts, economics, administrative sciences, allied health sciences, nursing, educational sciences, information technology, childhood, tourism, and heritage, natural resources, pharmacy etc. The university library contains 250 thousand paper materials and computerized database of scientific documents in various areas of knowledge. The library also consists of special purpose libraries.
