Author: Dhruv Post Date: 31 May 2023 There might be many online schools in India, but one online school that I know is the Dreamtime Learning School, an online school with a global reach. Online education as we all know, got popular due to the Covid 19 pandemic. During those two Covid years, there was no other go other than work from home (WFH) and study from home. Every school or college had to teach its students through online mode only. Once the pandemic subsided and things got back to normal, every school and college reverted to offline mode. Dreamtime Learning School or DTLS, its abbreviated name, on the other hand, broke the trend as it was conceived as an online school itself.
I came to know about this school from an acquaintance who lives in the same housing society as we do. He was looking for a non-offline mode of education for his two kids permanently, even after the Covid period. Once during our conversation, he mentioned the concept of online schools and DTLS. The family, however, ultimately, went for homeschooling for their kids instead of online education.
As far as the founding of Dreamtime Learning School is concerned, its brainchild is Lina Ashar, an Australian woman, who moved to India in the year 1991 and started teaching in Mumbai. She was not too pleased by seeing the standard of education of our schools then and resolved setting schools of her own. Thus the Kangaroo Kids and Billabong High School came into existence. These schools had a practical-oriented approach and were of international standard. Of late they have been operating in 17 cities, in India, Dubai and Maldives.
It was much later that the founders came up with the concept of an online school. Ever since then, the online school has been gaining popularity with every passing day. Dreamtime Learning School is operating from their present location at Bandra West in Mumbai. As of now, the school is open to enrollment from Foundation Year 1 (LKG) to Grade 7. In the coming years, it will have classes till higher secondary. Anyone from anywhere in India or abroad can apply for enrollment of their child. Those seeking admission have to apply online by visiting the school's official website.
Documents for admission
Among the documents that will be required for admission are Aadhar, Date of Birth Certificate, School Leaving Certificate and previous academic year Report Card. You will have to pay the fees online which includes tuition fees, fees for digital learning materials and online classes.
Affiliation
The school is affiliated with Cambridge Assessment International Educational and Pearson Excel, an UK International Board and will offer globally recognized International GCSE (IGCSE) and International A Level qualification.
Here at DTLS, the teachers are called learning coaches. The classes will be held online at the given time. The sessions will be recorded. In case anyone misses any lecture, he/she can see the recorded session later. The school believes in the no-homework concept. Comprehensive guidance is provided to the students so that they won't require any external tuition for any of the subjects.
Since the classes will be online, you will require tech devices like a Laptop or a Tablet with the following specifications:
OS: Not older than Windows 7 SP1 version (64-bit versions only),
Processor: Intel Core i5-2400s @ 2.5 GHz or AMD FX-6100 @ 3.3 GHz or equivalent,
Memory: At least 8 GB RAM,
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 or AMD HD 7870 (2GB VRAM with Shader Model 5.0 or better),
Internet speed: The internet connection should be 30 Mbps or above and without interruptions.
School timings
Depending upon the grade, there will be different school timings, as given below.
Foundational Year 1 : 12:00 PM to 2:10 PM
Foundational Year 2 : 9:00 AM to 11:10 AM
Grade 1 and 2 : 9:00 AM to 12:45 PM
Grade 3, 4 and 5 : 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM
Grade 6 and 7 : 8:15 AM TO 1:35 PM
Since the learning involves sitting in front of the screen, the duration of the classes is kept as limited as possible. There is a 5-minute break between periods where the students or learners, as per the school's terminology, are to close their screens and rest their eyes.
Extracurricular activities
The learners also get the opportunity to participate in puzzles, contests, games, fun activities, public speaking and various team events. However, there are no facilities for physical sports or performing arts like dance, drama, etc.
In all an online school has both pros and cons. Not every parent will seek online education for their children in place of regular schooling. Online learning is new-age learning, where you can get an international curriculum and standard of learning sitting in the comforts of your home in your city, irrespective of it being small or big. The online schooling system of Dreamtime Learning School might not suit everyone, but for many, this could be very much suitable. For example, homeschoolers, gifted learners, disadvantaged learners, learners with medical needs, disenchanted learners and learners who are constantly on the move because of their parents' transferable occupations, can very well take advantage of the online schooling concept.
