The Principal of a school is in a prestigious post and is answerable to the school- management for the overall performance of the school including the administration. The prestigious public schools would like to observe the different parameters within the candidates before the selection of a Principal working as a teacher in the same school.

The following parameters go in favour of a candidate -
1) The candidate must be smart and active while dealing with the different clients including the secretary of the schools. It means the aspirant needs to expand this skill by other routes if he is deficient in the presentation of the facts. A training session at a commercial institution might help improve communication skills. This applies to English, Hindi and the local language being spoken in the area where the school is located.
2) The candidate must have a sharp vision to sort out various issues and can make an independent decision to remedy the situation. Though this trait is an inborn feature varying from candidate to candidate, it can be developed through experience. Properly motivating the staff will also be a good quality.
3) The candidate must be conversant with the administrative work of the school where he is putting his services. As a Principal, he would be expected to manage the different areas such as income and expenses, the horticulture within the school premises, appointing a teacher to manage cultural functions within the premises, etc.
4) The candidate must have the ability to take care of a specific function if some staff is missing and be able to appoint someone or take charge of it.

It would be advantageous on the part of an aspirant to raise his qualifications suiting to the post of the Principal. If he has a B.Ed, he can go in for an M.Ed course, perhaps from some distance education source such as IGNOU, Karnataka Open University, Manipal Distance Education etc without a break of service. A certification in finance and accounting can also be helpful. An experience of 10 years as a school teacher is desirable to be considered for the post of Principal of a school.

A school principal is the person in charge of that school. Actually, in government schools, the designation "Principal" is remote. The in-charge of the school will be called the Headmaster. These days many Private schools are giving the designation of Principal even to the in charge of the school.

The school principal will have more administrative responsibilities than teaching work. He/ she will be taking care of admissions, discipline, accounts, etc. Administrative staff will be helping the principal in administration. He/ she will be the chief of that school and answerable for all happenings in the school.

The qualifications required are the same as those of a teacher in a school or a lecturer in a college. But more than 10 years of experience is required to get this post. The years of experience may vary from school to school. Candidates with BEd or MEd are eligible to become Principal of a high school. Teachers with a Diploma in Elementary Education ( DEd) can become Principal of an Elementary school.

So any teacher has to put up more service as a Grade 1 teacher to become a principal of the school. Already as you are a teacher, put in some service and then start applying for the post of Principal in other schools. Try to improve your qualifications and get some certifications in accounting and management. That may add value to your CV.

School principal is a very prestigious post and every teacher wants to be the principal of the school. If you are the teacher of a government school, then you would become the principal based on seniority.

In private schools, the management hires the principal according to the skills needed for the post. The educational qualification for the principal is graduation/post-graduation with a B.Ed. If you have completed an M.Ed then there is a higher chance of selection as the principal.

You need teaching experience, administration skills, leadership skills, communication skills, etc to become a good principal.
