B.Tech means Bachelor of Technology consisting of four year duration in the different branches such as Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Chemical, Computer Science, Electrical and Electronics, Electronics and Telecommunications etc. The aspirants having completed their Diplomas in the streams as indicated above would like to have their entries in the degree courses for their advanced knowledge taught in degree in engineering for their best promotion prospects in the industries or research fields.
Polytechnic Students are well equipped with the basics taught in the diploma level and they would opt for the lateral entry of the engineering courses meaning thereby they need not take their admission in the first year but on the strength of passing out their diplomas, they would be considered for admission in the second year of four year degree courses.
However, the criteria for admission is formulated by the admission committee of the college where the aspirants would be interested for their advanced studies. The university would not interfere in the admission procedures rather the university would have its concurrency with the colleges.
The following are the criteria for the admission through lateral entry -
1) Since the seats in the different streams for lateral entry is limited, the aspirants should have at least distinction marks of their three year diploma courses ie interns of percentage, it should not be less than 70% aggregate marks of the three year course.
2) If the strength of the students is large enough, the admission committee might decide for a written test followed by the oral for the scrutiny of the best candidates to fill up the seats.
3) Some concession might be offered to the children of defence, army and navy staffs in some of the colleges but the same does not hold good for all the engineering colleges/ Institutions.
Advantages of lateral entry admissions -
1) The aspirants need not repeat the first year of four year courses because of their clarities of first year courses.
2) In that way, the aspirants are saving both time and money which otherwise they could have incurred by way of their studies.
Their journey for the entire degree courses for the streams taken up by them would remain smooth provided their end result is above the 8 CGPA Scale or above 75 % marks of the entire semester.
After completing their four degree courses, they might be recruited by the following employers-
1) TCS
2) Infosys
3) Tech Mahindra
4) Accenture
5) HDFC Bank
6) Major Public undertakings such as D.V.C, SAIL, NMDC, ONGC etc.
