My son tried for JEE 2 years ago and he was aiming to get into the IITs or NITs in India. However, he could not make it to the NIT or IIT. He finally joined VIT Vellore.

My second son is appearing JEE Mains this year (2023) and he is aiming for NIT. However, he is a foreign citizen and so normal JEE-based admission to NIT is not possible for him. So we explored various options.

Typically, DASA (Direct Admission of Students Abroad) is the default option for foreign students for admission to NIT. Check out DASA Admission details on the official website of DASA.

While exploring the options for admission for foreign students to NIT, I found a new program by the government of India called "Study in India". This option is for foreigners to study in India.

Even though the "Study in India" program is meant for foreigners to come to India and study, this option can be used for students of Indian origin with foreign citizenship. Since my son has OCI card with foreign citizenship, this option will work for him.

One of my friend's daughter recently got admission to NIT Calicut in BE Computer Science through the "Study In India" program.

Please keep in mind that admission to NIT for foreign citizens through the DASA or Study In India programs is very expensive. In general, the yearly fees will be around 8,000 USD.

Let me summarize. Foreign citizens can get admission to NIT in India through 2 options:

1. DASA (Direct Admission to Students Abroad
2. Study In India program

Yes, foreign students can pursue courses in NITs through a scheme of the Ministry of Education, GoI, called DIRECT ADMISSION OF STUDENTS ABROAD (DASA) and for that, they have to fulfil a couple of criteria mentioned below:

  • A valid rank in the JEE (Main) is essential
  • Along with Mathematics and Physics, candidates must pass either Biology/Chemistry/Bio-Technology or Computer Science in their 10+2/ equivalent exams from a board recognized by the Association of Indian Universities

If students belong to SAARC countries, 50% of the tuition fees can be waived if they clear the qualifying examination required under DASA from SAARC countries.

There is a category called Children of Indian Workers in Gulf Countries (CIWG) where 5% of the seats under DASA are kept reserved. Countries that fall under the CIWG category are:

  • Iraq
  • Iran
  • Kuwait
  • Bahrain
  • United Arab Emirates
  • Oman
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Qatar

Yes. Foreign students can get admission to NITs in India. There are two ways for the same.

1. There are provisions for Admission for Foreign Nationals / Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) / Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) under the Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) Scheme for the undergraduate engineering program.
The candidates who wanted to join this course will have the above option and they have to attend SAT subject test and the score obtained on that test will be the basis for allocating a seat.

2. In addition to the above, a candidate can apply like any other Indian student for admission through JEE Mains score. The seat will be offered to the candidate based on his JEE mains score.

The admissions for NITs will be monitored by one of the NITs in India. The candidate can go through the notifications released by the institutes for admission and follow the procedure mentioned there.

Yes, it us possible for foreign students to get admission in NITs all across India. The National Institute of Technology are the premiere institutes that provide the best quality education and infrastructure all across India.

According to my research, the admission for Foreign Nationals and Non-residents of India is taken care of by DASA - Direct Admission of Students Abroad. It is an organization supervised by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India to assist admissions for Foreign Nationals and Non-Resident Indians for Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programmes across multifarious fields.

As for NIT's DASA helps co-ordinate students for admissions and for more information, one can get in contact with the office of admission of the particular NIT. I wish you all the best for your admissions.
