BAMS is an undergraduate course in Ayurvedic medicine and surgery. It is equivalent to MBBS and BHMS. One can opt for one of the following three PG courses after BAMS-

1. MD Ayurveda is a 3-year PG course in Ayurvedic medicine. There are some specialisations available in this course, such as Kayachikitsa (internal medicine), Shalakya Tantra (ENT and Ophthalmology), Panchakarma, etc.

2. MS Ayurveda is a PG course in the Ayurveda stream. This course concentrates on the surgical aspects of treatment. This is also a 3-year course.

3. In addition to the above two there is another PG course called DNB (Ayurveda) which is a postgraduate degree offered by the National Board of Examinations (NBE), which is equivalent to MD/MS in Ayurveda.

In addition to the above, there are some diplomas, PG diplomas and certificate courses offered by different institutes after BAMS. So after completing BAMS one can pursue any of them. Many colleges give admissions based on the rank obtained in the NEET PG exam. However, some institutes conduct their entrance test for admission.

The full form of BAMS is Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery and the duration of this undergraduate course is five years. After passing the undergraduate course through the Ayurvedic System, you can opt for the postgraduate course either for MD (Doctor of Medicine) or MS (Master of Surgery) in the current system.

MD Ayurveda is the study of healthcare which covers the detailed studies of good lifestyle and wellness. It is a three-year postgraduate programme covering different fields such as Surgery, Surgical Emergency, and Management of Traumatic Conditions apart from administration of Ayurvedic Medicines. You will learn the pharmaceutical properties of different herbs such as Ashwagandha, Brahmi, Sankhpuspi, Ashoka, Draksha, Sankhia and many more to know their effects on human bodies if administered to the patients. Exposure to the medicinal course which is an integral part of MD Medicine will equip you with the expertise of treating a patient holistically.
