Can I study medicine in USA and practice in India as a doctor?
Author: Janmejaya Mohanty Post Date: 15 Apr 2023 Yes, it is possible for Indian students to study medicine in the United States (US) and practice medicine in India as a doctor. However, the process of doing so requires several steps and qualifications.
Firstly, Indian students who wish to study medicine in the US will need to meet the eligibility requirements for admission to medical schools in the US. This typically involves completing pre-medical coursework, taking the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), and demonstrating proficiency in the English language.
Once accepted into a medical school in the US, Indian students will need to complete the four-year Doctor of Medicine (MD) program, which includes classroom instruction and clinical training. After completing the MD program, graduates will need to undergo a residency program in the US, which typically lasts between three to seven years, depending on the chosen specialty.
After completing the residency program, graduates will need to pass the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), which is a three-part examination that assesses the knowledge and skills of medical practitioners. Indian students who have completed their medical education and training in the US and passed the USMLE are eligible to apply for a medical license in the US and practice medicine there.
If Indian students who have completed their medical education and training in the US wish to practice medicine in India, they will need to obtain registration with the Medical Council of India (MCI). The MCI requires foreign medical graduates to take the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE) to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in medicine. Once they have passed the FMGE, they can apply for registration with the MCI and practice medicine in India.
Overall, Indian students who study medicine in the US can practice medicine in India as a doctor, but they will need to complete the MD program, residency training, pass the USMLE, and take the FMGE to obtain registration with the MCI. The process of becoming a licensed medical practitioner in India after completing medical education in the US requires several steps and qualifications.
Author: DR.N.V. Srinivasa Rao Post Date: 20 Apr 2023 Recently Indian Medical Council has announced a list of universities and colleges recognised and if the degree is from one of these institutes, a candidate can get a licence if the condition set by the Indian Medical Council are fulfilled. There are many good medical colleges in the US and they impart world-class training and education to the students, I feel. So I think a person who completed MD/ MBBS in the USA can start practising in India.
But, In my view, one should meet the following criteria.
1. The medium of Instruction should be English only.
2. After completing the course the candidate should be eligible to apply for the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). This is a three-part examination and only candidates who clear this examination only can practice in the US.
3. I heard that there is no need of writing a Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) for the candidates to graduate in medicine from an accredited University in the USA.
4. The candidate should have a valid passport with VISA and other immigration details.
5. The candidate should do his internship in India also.

First, he completed his medical degree in the US and then returned to India, where he completed a 1-year internship. After that, he had to pass a series of exams in order to get his medical license. Finally, he needed to complete some additional paperwork in order to be registered to practice in India.
The process can be a bit daunting as it requires a lot of dedication and hard work. Aside from studying for exams, it also requires a lot of paperwork, as well as complying with the rules and regulations of both countries in terms of medical practice.
However, it is definitely possible to do so and I highly recommend following your dreams. My friend is now a practicing doctor in India, and he couldn't be happier.
Ultimately, studying medicine in the US and practicing in India is an achievable goal, if you have the dedication and determination to make it happen.
