IIT students can do art time jobs as it is not prohibited.

An IIT student can get various part-time jobs. Depending on what was his earlier learning and present learning he can choose and get a suitable one.

However, the prime question is how much spare time can an IITian get after allocating time to various study and project-related matters and other essential needs.

The general opinion and feedback are that for an IITian aiming at 9+CGPA, he can spend an average maximum of 2 hours a day and 4 hours on the weekends.

But those who do not aim high score CGPA and just want to pass through, then such students may be spending just two hours studying a day and so may get 4 or even 5 hours of free time every day.

Generally, first-year students get less pressure and more free time. But that will be used for exploration of places, meeting and making new friends. The vacations and holidays may be us to visit back home and relatives. The first year is mostly for 'chill'.

From the second year onwards there will be academic and non-academic engagements and exams and CGPA pressure. Free time will be used to reduce pressure load and be free like visiting movies etc.

But as the Internet is free they can surf the net and watch movies or listen to music or read online books, do online shopping, etc. They can pursue their hobbies and passion like arts, sports, games, and other areas. Some may need to attend coaching or preparation for post-IIT competitive exams like IAS, GATE, etc.

So it is for the student to cultivate an optimum time management strategy keeping in mind his aims and goals and keeping a life–academic balance. That way, if he can spare some time after all other essentials and passions, consistently at least on weekends, they can get a suitable job like tuition coaching, data entry, online services for people, freelance writing, and posting on the net and media, citizen journalist assignments, etc. There can be some help assignments in the IIT itself for helping juniors.

The aim may not be a high salary, but mingling with society, people, and getting some pocket money keeps the mind fresh and creative.

As far as my knowledge goes, there are no restrictions for working on part-time assignments while studying at IITs in India. My brother's son did his Graduation in a Computer science UG course from IIT, Guwahati. I was discussing this with him on this issue and he was mentioning to me that, some students are working part-time and earning money while doing their courses.

As long as they attend the classes regularly and have the minimum required attendance, there will not be any problem. But the student should give enough time for his studies. Without losing track of his studies, if the student works on a part-time basis, it will be good for the student.

I understand some IT firms hire these students on a part-time basis. Even IITs are providing some opportunities to work part-time on the campus itself. A student can sit in his room and work on content writing, blogging, online tuition etc and earn money.

There is no restriction for pursuing part-time jobs while studying at IIT. However, there are various things that you should consider before looking for such part-time jobs. The first one is the college timings should not clash with your job timing as it would be impossible for you to attend the classes as well as it is against the law. So, your option to do a part-time job is restricted to the evening session. You can look for some online opportunities as I have seen many IIT students making a good amount while pursuing their degree courses from IIT.

As per my knowledge, there is no restriction in doing a part-time job. If you get time after attending class then you can do it. Some IITan do part time jobs which financial position is weak. Nowadays, there are many online jobs for earning like content writing, tuition, blogging, etc. One of my relative's sons doing IIT from Delhi and he is doing a part-time job for pocket money. If you can manage after attending class then nobody will restrict you. As per my suggestion, first, you should focus on your studies because generally, people's minds would divert after getting money. So, your interest may be less towards studies.
