The University of Mumbai has a dedicated wing for distance and open education known as the 'Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL)'. Earlier it was conceived as the Directorate of Correspondence Courses but in the year 1993, it was upgraded to IDOL and acquired status as a 'University Institution'.
Courses offered and eligibility
IDOL offers various distance and open learning courses under the CBCS (Choice Based Credit System) pattern to eligible candidates. It has two academic sessions - one starting in June month of the current year to May month of the next year and the other starting in January and ending in December every year. For the June to May session, it offers F.Y.B.A., F.Y.B.Com., M.A.-Part I, M.Com.-Part I, M.A.(Geo.)-Part I, M.A.Edu.-Part I, M.Sc.I.T.-Part I, M.Sc.Maths-Part I, M.Sc.CS-Part I, F.Y.B.Sc.I.T., and F.Y.B.Sc.CS courses. From January to December, it offers F.Y.B.A., F.Y.B.Com., M.A.-Part I, M.Com.-Part I, M.A.Edu.-Part I courses.
The eligibility criterion for these courses is in general a pass in the qualifying examination. For a Bachelor's degree, a pass in 10+2 would suffice and for a Masters' degree, a pass in Bachelor's degree is required. The candidates should visit and check the eligibility criterion in the 'old university website link' in the university website to ascertain the selection of subject/subjects for the desired course.
Application Process
The Application process is online and the candidates have to first register at Mumbai University by visiting the university website and going to Main Menu > Students > Admission and then selecting 'Click Here For Mumbai University Pre Admission online Registration'. A new page will open and the candidate will have to select 'Pre-Admission Online Registration' and click on 'Register' and enter the details for registration. Click on 'Accept' after filling in the details. Once registered the candidate can login the system by using the username and password provided by the system.
For applying for a distance course the candidate has to select IDOL from the top menu in the Mumbai University site and then follow the instructions for applying for a particular course. An applicant has to keep the following ready before filling out the 'Online Application for Admission' -
Email ID and mobile number.
Scanned copy of passport-sized photograph.
Candidate's scanned signature against a white background.
Residential address / Communication address
Mark sheets & Certificates of last qualifying exam.
Caste Certificate (If applicable).
Candidates should print a copy of the application form, Fee payment receipt, study material collection Form, and ID Card and keep it with them to present whenever asked by IDOL.
Candidates from other than Maharashtra State Board or Educational institutes in Maharashtra or Mumbai University are required to get approval from the IDOL Eligibility Unit before payment of the fee.
