It is wonderful that you prefer a career in teaching as a lecturer that involves zest and in-depth knowledge of the subject you have chosen. "Love what you teach and they will love it too" will be the motto of a lecturer or an instructor. You need to have good oral and written communication skills, research abilities, proper planning of lessons, knowledge of different teaching modalities, etc., to be an efficient lecturer. You must give lectures to the students effectively in a more adorable way to make them interested in the subject you are teaching.

A lecturer must be educated and trained in a particular field of study or some related courses as well. Often, they may be preferred to teach one or more according to their ability and specialty. Initially, they will be appointed as instructors, can be promoted as lecturers and professors too with experience and pursuing Ph.D. Thus, a lecturer is required to be academically qualified along with experience in this profession. The basic eligibility to become a lecturer is a PG in a specialized study of your choice. Qualifications may vary depending on the educational institutions. Some private colleges/universities appoint PG candidates to gain experience as instructors or trainers and may promote to a higher level of lecturer or professor with years of work experience. It may take at least 4-5 years depending on your knowledge and ability in teaching.

If you prefer to go in for government-run colleges/universities or UGC-approved colleges, you must clear the UGC NET (University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test). Apart from the UGC NET, there have been different entrance exams that you need to clear. Council of Scientific and Industrial Research NET is conducted for aspirants in scientific fields such as physics, chemistry, and mathematics. Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) test enables one to be qualified in engineering colleges in India. State-Level Eligibility Test (SLET) conducted by the UGC helps to become lecturers in the colleges/universities in the states in India.

My Cousin's Sister is a UG Lecture at Nirmala College and She has over 15 years of experience in this field. As I'm also interested to become a lecturer, I asked her for some suggestions and tips for it, I can share them below:

Choose a speciality and obtain a bachelor's degree: Choose early whether you want to pursue a career in academia as a professor of arts, business, or science. Pass the 12th Higher Secondary Certification test with a minimum combined score of 80–90%. This might make it easier for you to enrol in the bachelor's course of your choosing. It is crucial to keep up a strong scholastic record and graduate with much higher than the minimum prerequisite of 50–55 per cent overall marks.

Pursue a master's degree: Take the GATE test, enrol in the master's course of your choosing, and earn more than the minimal 50–55 per cent aggregate score required to pass. If you complete the master's degree program, you might be qualified to work as an instructor or a teacher. Your job is likely to advance as a result of your work expertise.

Pass challenging tests: You can take and complete the NET, SET, or CSIR NET competitive examinations after earning a master's degree. The SET only grants you eligibility for assistant professor jobs within the state you passed the test in, whereas the NET makes you eligible for assistant professor jobs in every college and institution across the nation. You might be chosen for a lecturer job or receive a junior research grant by completing the CSIR NET.

take graduate courses: After that, you can register for a doctoral course. If you hold a doctoral degree, you may be exempt from taking the competitive examinations and may instead apply immediately for a job as a college lecturer.

Obtain relevant skills: To acquire experience in the industry, you might think about specialising in a particular area and becoming licenced to practise. You can add to your teaching of the topic, for example, by getting your nursing licence and gaining nursing practice. While finishing your schooling, you can also acquire teaching experience by working as a student instructor, tutoring adults or children, or having a part-time teaching job. You might gain valuable expertise in teaching a topic by volunteering for a research position.

Research and publish academic work: To position yourself as an expert in your field, publish well-researched blogs, articles, and papers on your blog or website and make contributions to scholarly blogs, websites, journals, and other publications. To progress from the position of assistant professor to associate professor, you must write at least five excellent papers or books, and you must have at least ten publications to become a professor.

Search and apply to academic positions: Look for employment openings on college and institution websites, online career boards, networking sites for professionals, and social media. Customizing your résumé and cover letter for each job application may be helpful. You should also get comfortable with responding to the questions that recruiters are most likely to ask during job interviews.

To become a lecturer, the candidate should have a Master's degree with a minimum of 50% marks in the subject. A person with M.Sc., degree in organic chemistry can become a lecturer in organic chemistry from a recognised university. PhD candidates will be given preference.

In addition to the above qualification, the candidate should get qualified in the NET examination conducted by NTA on behalf of UGC. NTA will be conducting the NET examination two times a year and only candidates who are qualified for lecturership in this examination will be offered lecturer posts in government universities and colleges.

But qualifying in the NET examination will not give you a job. You have to apply to the educational institutions when they advertise for the post and attend the written test and/or interview that will be conducted by the institution. Based on your performance in the interview, you may be selected for the post.

NET qualification is not a must for a lecturer post in private universities and colleges. They will have their procedure for selection. But the candidate should have a master's degree.

My father is currently the Head of the Department of English at the Sree Sankaracharya Sanskrit University of Kalady. He graduated in Economics from Sacred Hearts College, Thevara with his Undergraduate Degree in Economics and did his Masters's in English from MG University, Chennai. After that, he wrote the UGC -NET - National Eligibility Test, which he passed with flying colours and gave him an entree to join as an Assitant Professor. As an assistant professor, you can engage in academia in both UG and PG. After a few years of experience as an Assistant Professor, you may be promoted to professor. Note that you can attain a PhD when you are an Assitant Professor and a Professor!
