Students who go to Australia for studies can get permanent resident status. A student has to apply for permanent residency after completing graduation. The student must 'express interest' through the Department of Immigration and Border Protection's SkillSelect migration program. The student has to express interest through an online service by the Australian government through which students can apply. A student has to apply for a skilled visa by submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI).

The following are the details to be provided-
1. Personal details,
2. Work experience information if any,
3. A nominated occupation
4. English Language proficiency details.
5. Certificates showing the acquired skills that are required for the nominated occupations.

The following are the types of Visas students can for extended stay and then permanent resident status-
1. Post-study work Visa: This is a two-year visa. Students who completed their studies for a minimum period of 2 years and obtained with UG or PG qualification can apply for this. A student who obtained this Visa can work for a Permanent Visa while working.

2. Skilled Migration: This is a way to obtain Permanent resident status in Australia. This will be issued based on the skills and the work experience of the student. There is no necessity that your candidature should be sponsored by an employer. The student should have some certificate to prove his proficiency in the English language. This visa will be given based on the points obtained by the candidate. The points will be allotted for the following
1. Applicant's age
2. Educational Qualification
3. English language proficiency
4. Work experience

3. Employer-Sponsored Visas: A candidate who completed 3 years of service in that country and if he gets the sponsorship from the employer with whom presently working can apply for this. Students who obtain temporary work Visas can apply for this.
