Author: DR.N.V. Srinivasa Rao Post Date: 27 Apr 2023 PhD is helpful in making a career. It is true in some cases and not true in some other cases.
As a PhD holder, I feel that the importance of a PhD will be for some selected careers only.
Once a B.Tech candidate came to me and asked me whether he should do his M-Tech or not. Before offering my comments, I asked him what are his career aspirations. He wanted to have a career in the software industry. Then I told him if he is having an offer in hand for a job, it is better to join the job instead of spending another two years doing M.Tech. He joined the job. After 2 years he came and told me that my advice is very useful. He said that he is getting a very good salary and fresh M Techs are working under him.
Another M.Sc passed relative asked my opinion about going for his PhD. Again I asked him the same question. What are his career aspirations? He said that he is more interested in going for a teaching post. Then I told him, it is very useful to him to go for his PhD. In a teaching career, a PhD is very useful. Many colleges prefer PhDs for senior faculty positions like Professors. A postgraduate may not be preferred as a professor. A candidate with a PhD can become a professor, Associate professor and also can guide students for their PhDs. Many private universities and colleges are offering higher salaries for PhDs. Even government colleges will give UGC scales for PhD holders only. Candidates who want to build a career in research-oriented professions like scientists and R&D engineers etc can go for a PhD.
A PhD will be useful for building a career if the candidate is opting for a career in the research field or teaching field. But it may not be very helpful for routine production jobs and other executive jobs.
But irrespective of career prospectus. doing PhD is a prestigious issue I feel. Only a select few can go for this and it is definitely useful for an individual to understand the methodology of solving a problem or finding out a better solution to replace the existing practice.
Personally, I got benefitted from my PhD in my career. I joined as an R&D Manager in a company. There I attained the liking of the top management because of my working methodology and problem-solving techniques which I learned during my PhD. I overtook many seniors and became President and then Director of the company.
Finally, think of your career aspirations and then take a call.
Author: Drupad Madhavan Post Date: 28 Apr 2023 PhD or Philosophy in Doctorate is considered to be the highest academic degree that one can attain in any field of study. My father and my aunt completed their PhD's a few years ago. I remember how my father would have constant meetings with his thesis advisor, that too in between his work hours. However, I recently came to know that he was receiving a stipend for his PhD work and he was allowed to take long paid breaks from his work!
The reason I shared this information is to state that acquiring a PhD depends on your career plans. If you want a job, you can undergo placements from your universities. I feel that PhDs are reserved for people who have excellent knowledge of their field and are very much interested in the phenomenon of Teaching. My dad and my aunt are both professors and they both acquired PhDs as it helps them in elating their job position and also brings an increment in their salary. My dad completed his PhD and is now currently the Head of the English Department at his University.
I would say that acquiring a PhD increased your number of opportunities and of course, it attracts a lot of respect as you get the title of 'Doctor'! From second-hand experience, I would say that attaining a PhD is an elevating experience.
I also have to state the demerits as I know a lot of people who 'dropped out' of their PhD due to pressure and inability to manage time and their personal life. I feel that it is not meant for everyone. At the end of the day, I feel that if you have a doctorate, you have an advantage over people in the academic field or any job position. It also means higher payment due to more knowledge as well as experience in the field.
