A Cartographer collects information by surveying or from the surveys conducted earlier. He also collects information from various sources like photos and videos available. Using that collected information a cartographer makes maps that are useful for various purposes related to land.

Any person who is interested in making maps and field works can become a Cartographer. The following are the steps one has to follow for becoming a Cartographer.

1. Study in 12th class with Mathematics as one of the subjects. The student should have an interest in drawing and the environment also to become a good Cartographer. Then going for an under graduation course in Geography would be better for a candidate to become a Cartographer. Other streams also can be studied but they may have to get some certification in Cartography. After completing UG if you are interested you can go for a PG course in a related course like geography with a specialization in Cartography as the colleges prefer PG students for these posts also.

2. They require additional skills like IT, analytical skills, problem-solving techniques and an eye for accuracy.

3. A Cartographer should be able to get the survey of the land done on his own if necessary, I feel. This is very essential for a cartographer in a college as he may have to give training to students to conduct surveys also.

4. Basically a cartographer in any college has to assist the teachers in conducting practical classes for the students. So the candidate should have good communication skills and in-depth knowledge of the subject.

I understand that a cartographer may generally have to carry out the following works as a part of their duties in a college-

1. Collecting all the required data and drawing maps based on the information collected.

2. Making new layouts and good frameworks.

3. Studying the old maps in the department and comparing the same with the present situation and doing necessary amendments.

4. He should be able to teach how to conduct a survey and should be able to guide the students to conduct surveys.
