A judge is a professional who judges the issue and gives a verdict. A judge is a legal professional.

A Judge will preside over the court proceedings. He/She will listen to both the parties involved in the case namely. defendants and prosecutors. After listening to both parties, the judge has to judge and come out with a verdict with applicable laws on the concerned matter.

The following are the steps in becoming a judge.

1. Acquire the required qualification: A person who wanted to become a legal professional should have a qualification in that field. A candidate should get a degree and then has to obtain a degree in Law. LLB or BL is the course that is required for this profession.

Otherwise, a candidate can join an integrated law course the duration of which is 5 years after completing the 12th class or equivalent.

2. Clear Judiciary Service Examination: After completing the Law degree, a candidate can register as an advocate enrolled under the Advocate Act 1961. To become a Judge in India, the persons having the required qualification should attend the Judicial Services Examination. This is known as PCS (J) (Provincial Civil Service Judicial ) Examination. Law graduates can become practising members of the subordinate judiciary only after completing this examination.

3. Qualify for judge: There are two types of examinations after PCS(J).

A) Lower Judicial Services (LJS): This examination will be conducted by State public service commission or the High Court. This examination is for appointing civil judges in state courts

A Candidate who completed Law graduation is eligible to appear for this examination. The candidate should have completed 21 years and should not have crossed 35 years of age.

There will be 3 rounds in this examination.

a) Preliminary examination. This is an objective-based test and will have multiple-choice questions. A candidate who obtained a minimum of 60% marks ( 55% for reserved persons) can be allowed to sit for the next round.

b) Main Examination: This is a descriptive type of examination and persons who acquired a minimum of 40% will be allowed for the next stage.

c) Viva Voce: The candidate who cleared both the preliminary and main examinations is called for this examination. The final selection will be based on the performance of the candidate in this interview.

B) Higher Judicial Services: This examination is conducted to promote civil judges to District judges. Practising advocates also can sit for this examination to get appointed as District Judges.

Eligibility Criteria: This may vary from state to state. Civil judges can write this examination to get promoted. Advocates who are having a minimum of 7 years of experience as practising lawyers in the court of law are eligible. The minimum age is 35 years and the maximum age is 45 years.

The test pattern will be the same as that of Lower Judicial Services. But the syllabus will be different.

The daughter of my sister-in-law is doing an internship for a judge in Punjab. I am giving hereunder the details of how to become a judge in India:

The Judge associated with the Judicial System is a very responsible, honorable job in India. A simple LLB is not enough to be a judge one must need to do more effort, dedication, and commitment to be a judge.

Must possess 10+2 in any stream (Arts, Science, Commerce, or Humanities can start a legal career. Must have completed BA.LLB, B.Com.LLB, BBA LLB, etc of five years integrated courses. Graduate candidates can opt for three years LLB course.

To become a judge in the Indian Judicial Services one must clear Judicial Service Examination or Provincial Civil Services Judicial Examination to become a judge in a subordinate court only.

After that, another examination i.e. Lower Judicial Services Examination and Higher Judicial Services Examination to be cleared.

Must be a citizen of India. Must possess LLB or LLM and fluency in Local / Regional language according to the state. The lower age limit is 21 and the upper age limit is 35 years and the relaxation is as per the rules of the Government.

For the Higher Judicial Services examination candidate must possess LLB with enrollment with the Bar Council of India and more than seven years of experience as an advocate.

To become High Court Judge one must have at least ten years of experience as an advocate in High Court.

To become Supreme Court Judge one must be a Judge of the High Court for a minimum of five years and 10 years of experience as an advocate in the High Court.

The Chief Justice of India is the highest post and only president of India can appoint this post.

A Judge is a legal profession. It is a very prestigious civil service in India. A Judge presides over the court proceedings and listens to both the defendants and prosecutors. Judge gives a verdict in the court after listening to both parties with applicable laws on the concerned matters.

Eligibility criteria: The candidate must be a Citizen of India.

Candidate should have an integrated 5-year or 3-year after graduation LLB degree or LLM degree (optional).

Candidate should be fluent in the local/ regional language (in some states).
Age limit: Candidates appearing for the Lower Judicial Services Exam must be at least 21 years of age. The upper age limit is not more than 35 years of age. Relaxations would be given to candidates belonging to the OBC/SC/ST/PWD Categories as per government norms. Age limit varies from state to state.
