A degree college, generally will not employ professors, as far as my knowledge goes. A degree college will have Assistant Professors. An Assistant Professor post is equal to a lecturer post.

During the 1980s there were no designations like Assistant Professors and Associate Professors. Those days the designations are Lecturer, Reader and Professor. So it is very difficult to become a Professor in a degree college. Becoming an Assistant Professor in a college required the following.

1. The candidate should have passed a Post graduation in Sociology or any related subject with a minimum of 50%.

2. The candidate should also complete PhD in the concerned area. Candidates who submitted their thesis can also apply. But they should produce their PhD certificate at the time of joining the job.

3. The candidate should also clear the NET examination and should qualify for a lecturership.

Such candidates should apply for the Assistant Professor post in a college against their notification. The college may conduct an interview and based on the performance the candidate will be selected for the post.

Assistant professors having 8 years of experience are eligible to apply for the post of Associate Professor. Some institutes may ask for research experience also supported by publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Associate Professors can apply for a Professor post if they have a minimum of 8 years of experience as Associate professors. They should be actively involved in research activities and should also guide some research scholars for their PhD. They should have some publications in peer-reviewed journals or in journals listed by UGC. At least 3 or 4 students might have obtained their PhDs under the guidance of the candidate. Such Associate Professors may get promoted to Professors.

As far as my knowledge goes chances of becoming a Professor in a Degree college are remote. A candidate should think of becoming a lecturer (Assistant Professor) in the degree college initially.

I was a Guest Faculty in a state university in Karnataka for some time. During that time I was discussing with full-time professors there and gathered the above information.
