For students coming from West Bengal and its neighbouring regions, an engineering seat at Jadavpur University is one of the most coveted ones. It is the dream of every engineering aspirant in Bengal to study at this prestigious university, which is one of the best in the country. Consistently being ranked amongst the top 20 engineering colleges in India, it is every engineering aspirant delight to study here. The computer science courses at JU as the university is widely known are the most sought-after ones. As per NIRF 2022 India Ranking, the university stands 4th in the university segment, 11th in engineering, 13th in research and 12th in the overall category.

Coming to admission to its undergraduate engineering courses, admissions are through the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations (WBJEE), a prestigious engineering entrance exam for admission to both state and private engineering colleges in West Bengal. The entrance exam is a highly competitive one and you have to score a very high rank if you are seeking admission to an engineering course in Jadavpur University, especially more for the computer science course. In recent years, sons and daughters of a few of my friends appeared for the test, but they could not score high enough a rank to get admission to this college. They had to instead settle with a college, a couple of ranks lower than JU.

Additionally, one should have passed 10+2 from the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education or any other equivalent exam from a recognised board with at least 60% marks in aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Math besides individual pass marks in each one of them. In addition, 60% marks in Math and should have passed in English with at least 30% marks. For SC, ST, OBC and PwD students the corresponding marks required is 45%.

The engineering admissions are open to not only students from West Bengal but to those from other states as well. However, for the general category students, 90% of the seats are reserved for West Bengal-domiciled students and only 10% for general category students from the rest of India. In general, a General category student from West Bengal has to score a rank less than 500, if he/she is seeking a computer science-related course, whereas for a candidate from other states has to get a rank lower than 100 for a corresponding seat.

For students seeking admission to postgraduate engineering programs like M.Tech, the admissions are mostly through GATE score. For such applicants, 70% of the weightage is given to the GATE score. For others like self-sponsored students, a weightage of 50% is given to their B.E./B.Tech marks. The balance weightage is given to factors like performance in tests, industry experience and so on. Industry-sponsored students too may apply for the M.Tech programs. Their industry experience is given most of the weightage.

As for the WBJEE, it is an OMR-based offline exam that is conducted on a single day, mostly during the month of April-May. It is a two-paper exam of two hours each. Paper-1 is for mathematics and paper-2 is for physics and chemistry. The total mark is 200 and the candidates have to qualify in both papers.

My personal experience of getting admitted to an engineering course at Jadavpur University was both exciting and nerve-wracking. After completing the application process and submitting my documents, I was relieved to hear that I had been accepted. The process involved attending an interview, taking a written examination, and submitting a portfolio of my past work. I felt prepared for the admission process and confident that I had the necessary qualifications to be accepted. I'm grateful for the opportunity to attend one of the best engineering schools in India and I am looking forward to a successful and fulfilling educational journey.
