How to select the best research director for doctoral studies?
Author: DR.N.V. Srinivasa Rao Post Date: 05 May 2023 The PhD degree is the highest academic degree one can obtain. PhD is a qualification that makes an individual ready for doing research further in the areas of interest. The minimum time for completing this course is about 3 years. But sometimes it may extend up to 5 years also.
The efforts of the students are very important for completing the work on time. But the guide's support for the progress of the work is also equally important. So any student who wants to pursue a doctoral degree should select the best available research guide. How to select is the question?
Generally, the following are the points to be considered before going to a guide to ask for his acceptance to guide him/her during the work.
1. What is the area of specialisation of the guide we are selecting and is it the same as that of the area we are planning to work?
2. What is the research guidance history of the guide? How many students are presently working under him/ her? How many doctorate degrees were awarded under his/ her guidance? How many publications are there? These are some points the student should enquire about.
3. What is the maximum time taken by a student under him/ her to complete the work and what is the minimum time?
It is easy to get the above information if the student is planning to carry out PhD in the same institute where he/ she did his/ her PG. But if the student is planning to go to a new institute, to get the above said information some networking is to be carried out.
The details of the faculty will be available on the website of the institute. So the student can get the details of the faculty from the website. Then he can select a proper guide.
The student can talk to the students presently working under that faculty and can get information about the guide. His/ her way of helping the students, support that is being rendered by the guide in completing the work etc. can be gathered.
All the laboratories and institutes will have a maximum limit on the number of students a guide can have at any point in time. Generally, guides also will try to take the best students available. So before going and requesting a faculty to accept you as a scholar under his guidance, you should prepare well with the subject and you should be able to present your case in a way that the guide will get attracted.
I did my PhD from Andhra University and I was lucky to get a very cooperative, able and supportive guide. I could complete my work even before completing 3 years and submit my thesis immediately after completing the minimum stipulated time. I have seen some scholars in the university who could not complete their work even in 5 years. Here in some cases, non-cooperation from the research guide is a reason for this delay.
I feel, Your task will become easy if you are working under a guide who is supportive and will guide you to solve the problems that may crop up during the work.
Author: Umesh Post Date: 05 May 2023 Many students after completing their PG courses go for PhD degrees. For acquiring a PhD degree one has to register in a research institute and select a topic and start research work under a suitable, experienced, and capable guide. A good guide can make a big difference in the work carried out by the student as proper guidance can always bring brighter results.
The role of a guide is not limited because a guide has to help the student right from selecting a good topic to carrying out the exhaustive research work and then preparing a thesis for approval.
So searching for a good guide for a doctoral program is the most crucial element in the process and one has to collect this information from some research scholars who are already doing research work under different guides.
Another approach is to dig out the research thesis submissions from the institute library and then meticulously go through a few of them and find out who the guides were for them. The quality and presentation of the research papers would give a hint as to who is the best guide available.
One can also check the credentials of the available guides from the information available on the university intranet. There is no substitute for experience and a guide who had mentored a large number of students for research work under him would always be a better choice.
