To get admitted to post-graduate courses in various IITs and NITs, the candidates should attend the Joint Admission test generally called JAM. Every year this will be conducted by one of the participating institutions. NITs, IISc, DIAT, IIEST, IISER Pune, IISER Bhopal, IIPE, JNCASR, and SLIET are the various institutions participating in this test. This year this test was conducted by IIT, Gauhati.

The eligibility requirements for attending this test are as follows.
1. Candidates should have completed their bachelor's degree or should be currently studying in their final year of the programme. Students who are in their final year and appearing for this test should produce proof of passing the examination by 1st September of the year of sitting for the examination.
2. The candidates who were not given a mark sheet should produce a certificate showing the subjects studied in their graduation and signed by the Head of the institution.
3. Foreign Nationals having an Indian UG certificate can also apply for this examination but subjective to the policy of the admitting institute.

JAM is a computer-based test and will be conducted in 7 subjects. The subjects are
1. Biotechnology (BT),
2. Chemistry (CY),
3. Economics (EN),
4. Geology (GG),
5. Mathematical Statistics (MS),
6. Mathematics (MA), and
7. Physics (PH).

This test will have all objective-type questions only. There will be three types of questions: (i) Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ),
(ii) Multiple Select Questions (MSQ), and
(iii) Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.

A candidate can appear for two subjects. That means they can attend two test papers. One in the morning session and the other one in the afternoon session.

Students who wanted to appear for this test should apply through the admission test website created for that year's test. The website for this year is JAM 2023 IIT Guwahati.

The IIT M.Sc. Joint Admission Test for Masters (known in short as JAM) is the online admission test that is mandatory for students aspiring to get admission to an M.Sc. program at a prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) as well as other institutes offering the Master's program such as the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru, Karnataka, NITs, etc.

The score that you obtain through JAM will allow you to seek admission to these courses
in the various IITs and other participating institutes-
1. M.Sc.
2. M.Sc. (Tech)
3. M.Sc.-M.Tech. Dual Degree
4. MS (R) [this is Master of Science (Research)]
5. Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D.
6. M.Sc. - Ph.D. Dual Degree
7. Integrated Ph.D.

Of course, the final selection for a course will also be dependent on fulfilling the required Eligibility Requirements (known as ERs) along with the required Minimum Educational Qualifications (known as MEQs).

Eligibility: All nationals, that is, both Indian and foreign nationals, are welcome to appear for this exam. You need to have a Bachelor's with some courses requiring you to have done specific subject(s) in the Bachelor's course and passed those in the qualifying exam (refer to the official information brochure for details). Age-wise, there is no restriction at all.

JAM papers: The Computer Based Test (CBT) is generally three hours with two shifts, in 7 papers-
1. Chemistry (this comprises Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Inorganic Chemistry)
2. Physics (questions related to properties of matter, magnetism, thermodynamics, electricity, etc.).
3. Maths (questions related to algebra, calculus, etc).
4. Mathematical Statistics (questions related to number sequences, matrices, statistics, etc).
5. Biotechnology (this comprises Biology, Chemistry, Maths, and Physics).
6. Economics (this comprises Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Statistics for Economics, Indian Economy, and Mathematics for Economics).
7. Geology (contains questions related to applied geology, structural geology, the planet Earth, etc).

Each paper has 3 sections, the first two with Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), and the third with Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.

Application procedure for IIT M.Sc. JAM: You have to check which IIT is organizing the entrance test and register through the link given at that IIT's official website (last year IIT Guwahati was the organizing institute). Read the brochure that is available to download for free so that you are aware of all aspects of the test, including eligibility criteria, syllabi of each paper of the test, the application fee, etc. The brochure will also provide clear guidance on the online registration and application procedure.

During the online application procedure, you will be required to upload certain documents, so scan the originals and keep them ready. These include a photo ID, signature, relevant certificate if applying under a reserved category, etc. Then pay the application fee online through Netbanking or with a debit card or credit card. Ensure that the documents are as per requirements in terms of clarity, format, size, etc. Take a printout after submitting the application, and regularly check the official website to know the date to download the Admit Card as this is mandatory to appear for JAM, along with photo ID proof in original.

After the exam: You can download the Scorecard from the official website, and then check out the website of the institute where you are seeking admission to know the further admission procedures and documents required for the verification process.

All the best!
