Is BAMS a medical degree course and the Dr prefix can be put after completing the course?
Author: Ajay Gupta Post Date: 09 Jul 2024 BAMS is an Ayurvedic medicine degree course and you will be called an Ayurvedic Doctor for sure. Ayurveda is an alternative medicine system and different from the allopathic system, which is recognised all over the world. Ayurveda is well known in India and you can surely use the prefix of Doctor with your name without any problems but you need to mention Ayurvedic too along with it to avoid any confusion. Hence, in my view, there is no problem at all because you have earned an alternative medicine degree that has recognition all over the world.
People from all over the world visit India for ayurvedic treatment in Kerala and other reputed ayurvedic centers. Panchakarma is a famous ayurvedic treatment that has been known to cure many diseases where the allopathic medicine system has failed. If you have studied from a good college and have the required skills then surely your ayurvedic treatment will attract patients from all over the world. Any person who can cure diseases and has a BAMS degree will be considered a Doctor without any doubt. All you need to do is keep applying your knowledge to treat patients with the skills you have gained during your studies. Just make sure you have studied at a recognised Ayurveda college and got registered as an Ayurvedic Doctor after completion of the degree.
Note that in some States, Ayurvedic doctors cannot treat patients with allopathic medicines as it is not allowed, and can get their license cancelled.
Author: DR.N.V. Srinivasa Rao Post Date: 11 Jul 2024 BAMS is an undergraduate course in Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery. It is equivalent to MBBS in Allopathy and BHMS in Homeopathy. It is a medical degree course only. A candidate who is qualified in it can register her/his name for medical practising and can work as a doctor. He/ She can prefix his name with Dr. I know many BAMS-qualified doctors who prefix this Dr. to their name.
