The seat allocation in MBBS and IITs etc is not a simple issue. There are quotas. For example in MBBS, there are some seats under the central quota and some seats will be filled by the state quota. Similarly, there are some reservation quotas also. A reserved category person for his rank gets a seat in the normal quota he will be allotted a seat in the normal quota and the reserved quota will go to another candidate from that sector.

There are many permutations and combinations. So predicting seat availability and applying for that seat is very difficult. Any wrong prediction may make a candidate lose his seat. So one should know the availability of seats exactly when his turn comes.

I have some personal experience in this matter. I have attended two counselling as a parent with my two sons. Initially, when the counselling started, my elder son told me that he wanted to join a particular college in a particular branch. When the availability of seats was displayed, it was thought that chances were very remote for him to get a seat in that college. So he thought of the next options. But exactly when he was called for showing the seat availability, there were two seats in that college and he got admission to that college. Without a counselling process if we were asked to give our preference we might have lost the chance.

Hence I feel the counselling process is a must and it will be helpful to the students to know the exact chances for getting a seat.

If you are looking to get admission through JEE and NEET, then you have to appear for a centralized counseling process conducted by respective authorities. I think you need to appear for counseling which is the only way to get admission to top colleges. Only in private colleges, you will get admission on management quota.

You can apply for national-level counseling which is done for IITs and IITs. There are state-level entrance exams to offer admission on priority to JEE and NEET rankers. All you have to do is apply for it when the notification comes. When they call you to attend the counseling you have to visit the center and lock your options to get the best possible college according to your rank.
