Well, it is difficult to vouch for every country in the world, but in India, if not GMAT, a student should have a valid score in say CAT, MAT, XAT, CMAT, ATMA or any other prominent entrance exam test scores for admission to an MBA program. Most admissions at institutes like the IIMs are through CAT, an exam administered by the IIMs themselves. Admissions at XLRI Jamshedpur are through XAT, which is administered by the institute itself. Similarly, many other institutes, especially the state-level institutes have their own setup of entrance tests through which they filter candidates for admission to the MBA programs. A few of these state-level entrance exams are MAH CET, TSICET, UPSEE, and TANCET administered by Maharashtra, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu respectively. Many other institutes have no such preferences and any valid test score, whether CAT, MAT, GMAT or CMAT is credible enough.

However, at universities in the United States, a GMAT or a GRE score is essential, if you are seeking admission to any of the management programs there. Either of the two is fine with no particular preference for one or the other. A valid GMAT or GRE score is all that counts with most universities not imposing any minimum marks criteria.

In the UK too either of the two test scores, the GRE or GMAT is fine. But while researching MBA admissions in Australia, though some institutes demand a valid GMAT score, I came across many universities that require only a TOEFL or IELTS score. The reason perhaps, is that Australian universities in general give more weightage to the practical experiences gained by the candidates during their course of studies at school and college rather than just their performance in exams like the GMAT, which reflect the candidate's potential in a limited way only. At the same time, more focus is on aspects like whether the candidates have been doing consistently well throughout their studies, be it at school or undergraduate studies and not just in one exam like the GMAT.

In New Zealand too the requirements are similar to those in Australia. Some universities do ask for GMAT scores, whereas many others insist just on TOEFL or IELTS scores. However, I have come across many institutes in New Zealand that require a certain amount of work experience on the part of the candidates.

Thus we can see that every country has their own set of rules and conditions for admission to MBA programs at their universities.

Most business schools ask for GMAT for admission to MBA or other management courses. But there are many recognized business schools that will offer a seat to you without a GMAT score also. Such schools may see the experience the candidate is having in the industry in the related field. Some colleges will have their own evaluation methods and they may have their own entrance test for offering seats in these courses. One of my colleagues who completed his graduation and working in an MNC took leave and did his MBA from a university abroad without GMAT. They offered him the seat after seeing his experience and the marks he obtained in his UG. Some colleges abroad may give importance to the candidate's research interests like presenting or publishing papers while he was a student and offer him a seat.

I understand that the following institutions are offering seats to suitable candidates even without GMAT.

1. Ross School of Business, University of Michigan ( https://michiganross.umich.edu/ )
2. Georgetown University ( https://www.georgetown.edu/ )
3. Texas A & M University (https://www.tamu.edu/ )

The students can visit the websites of these institutes and get the complete details as I am not fully aware of the detailed procedure for selection.

Similarly, you may find some institutes in Canada, Australia and New Zealand also. But make sure of the financial requirements for such universities before you apply. A student can take the help of reliable education abroad consultants to get further information about such institutes.

No, the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is not compulsory for studying an MBA program in any country abroad. The admission requirement for MBA programs can vary across institutions and countries.

GMAT is widely accepted by many business schools around the world. While some business schools may accept alternative standardized tests such as Graduate Record Examination (GRE). In certain cases, business schools may even waive the standardized test requirement altogether, if the candidate has other qualifying credentials and substantial work experience.

Some business schools may consider a holistic view of a candidate rather than completely relying on standardized test scores, they may consider candidates' academic performance, experience, personal essays, interviews, and letters of recommendation.

It is recommended to research and review the admission requirements of the specific MBA programs in business schools you are interested in. You can reach out to their admission offices, and their official websites or consult an educational counselor to know specific test requirements and alternative options available.
