Is it necessary to crack the IELTS to study in Finland
Author: Dhruv Post Date: 24 Nov 2023 Whether or not to crack the IELTS for studying in Finland depends upon the student category you belong to. Finnish and Swedish are the official languages of Finland. As such most of the courses at the different universities in Finland are conducted in Finnish or the Swedish language. However, many universities conduct courses in English for the benefit of foreign students who are not familiar with either Finnish or Swedish.
Now these universities expect every foreign student who intends to study in Finland in English to have a certain level of proficiency in the language. But there are a few exceptions. For example, candidates belonging to countries in the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA), the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand need not appear for either the TOEFL, IELTS or any other English language proficiency test. Others, who are native speakers of English also need not crack any such tests.
On the other hand, candidates belonging to the rest of the world, including, India have to crack any one of the language proficiency tests, be it IELTS or TOEFL in case they intend to study in Finland. Apart from the above two one may also crack any of the following tests such as the Pearson Test of English (PTE), Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE), and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE).
One exception for non-native speakers of English is if they have done part of their qualifying degree in English in Finland, then they are exempted from cracking any of the proficiency tests.
As far as the scores are concerned, most universities in Finland require an IELTS score of 6.0 to 6.5. The corresponding TOEFL score ranges from 79 to 92. Some of the popular universities in Finland that insist on these tests from non-English speaking or non-EU/EEA candidates are Aalto University, Laplard University of Applied Sciences, Tampere University, University of Finland and so on.
So the gist of the matter is if you are from India or any of its neighbouring countries, then you need to crack the IELTS or the TOEFL to study in Finland.
