Whether or not to crack the IELTS for studying in Finland depends upon the student category you belong to. Finnish and Swedish are the official languages of Finland. As such most of the courses at the different universities in Finland are conducted in Finnish or the Swedish language. However, many universities conduct courses in English for the benefit of foreign students who are not familiar with either Finnish or Swedish.

Now these universities expect every foreign student who intends to study in Finland in English to have a certain level of proficiency in the language. But there are a few exceptions. For example, candidates belonging to countries in the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA), the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand need not appear for either the TOEFL, IELTS or any other English language proficiency test. Others, who are native speakers of English also need not crack any such tests.

On the other hand, candidates belonging to the rest of the world, including, India have to crack any one of the language proficiency tests, be it IELTS or TOEFL in case they intend to study in Finland. Apart from the above two one may also crack any of the following tests such as the Pearson Test of English (PTE), Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE), and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE).

One exception for non-native speakers of English is if they have done part of their qualifying degree in English in Finland, then they are exempted from cracking any of the proficiency tests.

As far as the scores are concerned, most universities in Finland require an IELTS score of 6.0 to 6.5. The corresponding TOEFL score ranges from 79 to 92. Some of the popular universities in Finland that insist on these tests from non-English speaking or non-EU/EEA candidates are Aalto University, Laplard University of Applied Sciences, Tampere University, University of Finland and so on.

So the gist of the matter is if you are from India or any of its neighbouring countries, then you need to crack the IELTS or the TOEFL to study in Finland.

At present, the following are the rules to be followed by international students if interested in studying in Finland without cracking the IELTS - The students need to apply online to the universities or the colleges of Finland if they have selected the courses of their choice. The students need to show their abilities that they can speak fluent English and the same would be judged by the interviewer/interviewers during the course of their interviews held through Skype or video conference.

The other conditions given below need to be fulfilled-
1) The candidates have to turn up for the oral interview sessions where they have to show their best performances enabling them to be selected for the courses in which they are interested.
2) They need to apply for the existing scholarship system to meet their expenses relating to the tuition fees. This has to be done while they are applying for their universities to their admissions.
3) The university would release a confirmation letter or a letter of acceptance once they are selected for the courses which they had applied for.

The students need to submit the following documents during the student visa process-
1) A valid Passport
2) The Passport Photo
3) A certificate of acceptance from the university/ institution from where they were declared successful in their final interviews.
4) Details of the scholarships applied by the candidates.
5) evidence of sufficient funds to manage their financial needs.
6) Proof of the health insurance policy.
7) Previous Qualifications which they have acquired earlier.

Finland offers courses in English medium and you must have IELTS or TOEFL score to prove your English proficiency. Top universities in Finland will surely ask for English proficiency certifications like IELTS or TOEFL because these are the most preferred certificates accepted around the world by top universities. Hence, if you have any such score it will be beneficial for you when applying for admission to top universities in Finland.

There are some exceptions available for students who have school certification from an international board. There are international schools that offer courses purely in English medium and they may be allowed for admission because of their school qualification affiliated with an international board. Hence, if you have studied from a board like CBSE or any state education board then IELTS or TOEFL score is compulsory for admission abroad.
