When I was in high school, a young man from our village completed a B.Sc. in Agriculture and returned to our village. His family had agricultural land and he started implementing the modern methods of farming which he studied in his course. Soon he became very famous in that Taluk and received many best farmer awards. He used to be called by others for suggestions for the problems they were facing in their farming profession. He used to say that a course in agriculture is very important for a country like India where agriculture is the profession for many people of the country. I feel that his observation is correct.

Like in any other subject, in Agricultire also there are different courses. There is a UG course, a PG course and a PhD course in this subject. In addition to that, there are certificate, diploma and PG diploma courses in the related subjects. A student who has an interest in this subject can go for these courses after completing the 12th class.

The scope for agriculture students in our country is high as we have vast agricultural land in the country. This will give way for a variety of jobs to these students. The chances will be there in agricultural research, agribusiness management, agricultural education, and farm management. There will be scope in other sectors like horticulture, poultry farming, dairy farming, and agro-based industries. The chances for a better career depend more on the qualifications the individual has and also on the grasp of the subject.

The following are the areas where one can find opportunities-
1. Teaching: Candidates who have master's degrees in agriculture or related subjects can go for teaching jobs in various institutes where this subject is taught. There will be subjects like Soil science. agronomy. crop science etc., in these institutes. There are government as well as private colleges in the country.

2. Research: Indian Agriculture Research Institutes are there in many places in India and a lot of research work will be going on in these institutes. They appoint graduates, PGs and PhDs in different roles in these laboratories. Similarly, there are some other laboratories in both government as well as private sector where the requirement of qualified people in this subject are required.

3. Manufacturing: There are many establishments manufacturing insecticides, pesticides and fertilisers. These organisations will also have agriculture students in their sales, marketing and other departments.

4. Advisors: Many farmers in India seek technical advice from people with expertise in this line. They may be expecting advice in areas like crop management, modern methods of organic farming etc. So one can be a freelance consultant and earn by giving the relevant technical suggestions.

5. Bank and insurance jobs: Banks and insurance companies require qualified people to manage their activities. At the same time, these graduates can compete for posts like clerk, officer etc in these organisations.

6. Government Jobs: There are jobs in the Agricultural department like agriculture officers. UPSC and State public service commissions may be advertising these posts. After completing graduation in this course these candidates can think of civil services and other government jobs.

So after completing the 12th class one can think of doing a course in agriculture and its related subjects and chances are high for a good career for such candidates.
