A person interested in selling with some knowledge of pharmacy and chemistry can take up the job of a Medical representative. He should also have good communication skills. He will be a bridge between the doctors and the medicine-manufacturing companies. These representatives regularly meet doctors and explain to them about the medicines their company manufactures and they will request doctors to prescribe the same for the needed patients. He will visit the medical shops and see that stocks of their company medicines are available in the medical shops.

A medical representative career is rewarding and beneficial to people who are interested in travelling and who can convince people with their talks. A person who wants to become a salesperson in the healthcare industry should have some special skills like communication skills, organising skills etc. A salesperson should have the patience to hear what others say and should be ready to travel a lot. A medical representative can excel in his career and reach the highest position if he is a self-motivated person. He has to plan his career. He should be flexible and should be able to convince the doctors and see that the products made by their company will be prescribed by them. Then only he will be successful.

Performers will get good pay hikes and promotions. One of my uncles joined as a Medical representative at Glaxo company. He used to travel a lot, meet doctors and maintain good relations with medical outlets. He used always to exceed the targets given to him by the company and he retired as their State head of sales. He earned many awards and rewards, He received star performer awards many times. So I strongly say that if you join as a medical representative and perform well in a good manufacturing company, you will have a good scope for career prospectus. It all depends on your performance. There is a scope for a performing person to become a sales manager within no time.

In this profession, there will not be any fixed working hours. They will be given targets. One has to plan his schedules and timings and accordingly one has to work. The salaries are good and depend more on the company you are employed. There are well-reputed companies which will pay very good bonuses in addition to salary and perks if any of their employees exceeds the given targets. Many rewards and gifts will be there for star performers.

In my relative's circle, there are 4 Medical representatives with whom I have good contact. All of them joined as medical representatives and went up to GM sales of their company. They all say that at the end of the day, they feel happy as their efforts are useful in the well-being of many persons and they say they are having a lot of job satisfaction.

Another advantage of this profession is networking. One can contact many doctors, many professionals and related persons. They can maintain good relations with all of them. This will be very helpful for them in advancing their careers. Also, a medical salesperson can learn new things that are useful in his life as he will be in touch with different people with different mentalities and abilities. One should have a chance to learn the latest developments in the field.

I strongly believe that it is a good profession to excel in our career if we have the required qualities and qualifications for the same.

Taking up a career as a medical representative might not be smooth for all professionals since it demands a lot of stamina to approach doctors and hospitals to promote the products. The whole exercise might create fatigue for the professionals involved. The interview process of Dr Reddy Laboratories, Glaxos, Pfizer, Alembic and other reputed pharmaceuticals is not easy either. These companies recruit talented aspirants assessing their full potential in terms of their communication strength and their skills to convince both the doctors and the different medical stores why the products of their pharmaceutical companies should be given top priority in the selection though many such similar products are available in the market. Some of the reputed pharmaceuticals include group discussions to recruit talented professionals. However, for most medical representatives, the explanation indicated in earlier responses is a stimulating point in their job career.

The following are plus points to choose a career as a medical representative -
1) This profession provides the aspirants a whopping amount of payment by way of monthly salaries and attractive commissions by the reputed pharmaceuticals.

2) Once the aspirants achieve the sales target decided by the company, they get extra commissions for such achievements. The companies keep a track - record of their consistent performance and they could achieve a faster promotion for their commendable jobs. In fact, if they can be good intermediaries between the pharmaceutical companies and the doctors with skills in convincing, they might be offered out-of-turn promotions sometimes. For example, they might be promoted as area managers of a given locality and under him, a fixed number of medical representatives would be reporting to him to promote the company business.

Any role you want to undertake needs true dedication and discipline. The job of a medical representative is to promote the medicines of a pharma Company which he represents by projecting them with relevant information and side effects to the Doctors and medical agencies. He has to travel regularly and thoroughly interact with all the stakeholders including Doctors as per the appointed timings and dates. In this process, he has to wait for a long time and needs patience. The earnings would be lucrative and promotion avenues like Area Manager etc. would be there provided you work hard. Also, there should not be any deviation as a Medical Representative would be interacting with more people including Doctors and their staff. As far as stability is concerned, it all depends on the individual and his performance. As such, any private job falls under this category.
