Makara Sankranti is a Hindu festival. Makara means Capricorn zodiac. Sankranti means the transition of the Sun from one zodiac to another. Makara Sankranti falls on the day when the transmigration of the Sun takes place from Sagittarius to Capricorn. This transition is considered auspicious, and lots of spiritual and religious acts are performed throughout India to purify one of all the sins. Diety Sun is worshipped on this day. Sun is the ultimate source of energy. In its absence, life would not sustain on Mother Earth. It is a day when we pay our respect to the deity in various forms and show our gratitude. It is a day which is highly significant for farmers. They pay their respect to the Sun deity for bringing them good yields throughout the year. They worship all the equipment that they use in farming.
People all over India take a dip in the holy rivers to cleanse their minds and bodies from all their sins. It is a day to remember ancestors and ask for their forgiveness that will not only help in self-healing but also healing passed-out souls. Apart from cleansing and forgiveness, the donation is also an important aspect of this festival. Sweets are prepared from sesame and jaggery. For him, Makar Sankranti mainly meant kite flying! We would have kite-flying competitions at our University during Sankranti and my friend would become a different persona, and he would win it every time! According to my friend, Makar Sankranti or Uttarayan, is seen as a jubilee of tremendous ebullience and elation throughout the entirety of India celebrated on the 14th of January, every year. The celebration signifies the day of the earth shifting into the astrological sign of Capricorn, known as Makar in Hindi, stating the commencement of prolonged days.
Most importantly, Makar Sankranti venerates the time of harvest and the prosperity of crops that individuals receive, displaying gratitude to the Sun God. This period is an occasion to indulge in traditional delicacies made from sesame seeds, jaggeries, and rice, such as til-gud laddoos, khichdi, and Puran Poli, very scrumptious Gujarati delights.
