Miranda House or Lady Shri Ram College for Women – which college is better for B.El.Ed.?
Author: Vandana Post Date: 22 Aug 2023 Miranda House, as well as the Lady Shri Ram College for Women, are both providing quality education for women, featuring in the 2023 NIRF ranking list of the top 10 Colleges (the former is #1 and the latter is #9) a testimony to this fact. So you are considering two excellent options to pursue a Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.) course. The ranking is all very well, and as far as faculty and campus infrastructure goes, there are no doubts about the quality of teaching and facilities, but in my opinion, why not consider things like the fees, and hostel availability? More important - in terms of a future career, I would recommend the one that will provide you with better placement opportunities with a good pay package. This and other crucial aspects I have covered later on in this informative write-up.
A Quick Synopsis: Miranda House, as well as Lady Shri Ram College for Women (also known simply as LSR) are both affiliated to the University of Delhi (DU). The 4-year Integrated B.El.Ed. program offered at these two colleges can be taken up after Class 12. While Lady Shri Ram College for Women introduced the B.El.Ed. in 1998, Miranda House launched it in 2006. The former offers some 70 or more seats, there are about 60 or so at the latter college. The course at both is offered in English and Hindi medium and combines lectures, seminars, group discussions, assignments, field visits, etc with recommended reading material. Checking out the websites of the two colleges, you will discover the uniqueness of each college's approach to the teaching-learning process.
Keeping aside the campus facilities and faculty expertise, let's have a look at four other primary aspects of the two prestigious colleges to help you compare Miranda House and Lady Shri Ram College for Women and take an informed decision on where to pursue the B.El.Ed. course.
Here goes- 1. Syllabus: Since both the colleges are affiliated with the University of Delhi, they have a common syllabus that was designed with the collaboration of senior academicians and school educators at the university's Maulana Azad Centre for Elementary and Social Education (MACESE), Central Institute of Education (CIE). You will be studying mandatory and optional theory courses, mandatory practicum courses, and doing an internship stint as well.
2. Course Fee: You will be paying approximately 20k to 21k for the first year of the B.El.Ed. course. Thus you should be prepared to pay a little over 80k for the full 4-year program. You also need to consider the fee for hostel accommodation.
3. Hostel accommodation and Fee: At Miranda House, there are just three hostel seats available for outstation students of the B.El.Ed course (each course of the college has a specific number of hostel seats that are allotted on the basis of merit). The hostel fee for new admission is likely to be approximately 32k for the first year, and you can make inquiries about the fees for the subsequent year through the email contact that is provided at the end of this post.
At the Lady Shri Ram College for Women, you will need to find out if hostel accommodation is available because last year the premises were under renovation and unavailable for students of the 2023 batch. Hence, at the time of posting this information, I am not aware of the hostel fees. Moreover, note that the campus hostel is available only for first-year students on a meritorious basis.
Advisory: Since there are very limited hostel seats for B.El.Ed. students at both campuses, it would be best to start searching for off-campus accommodation well in advance, perhaps an independent rental flat or a paying guest accommodation that you can share with other students, and one where you can stay for the entire duration of the four-year course. It is suggested to look out for advertisements in the local newspapers for govt. notifications about hostel accommodation in Delhi.
4. Placements & Pay package: Both colleges have a dedicated Placement Cell that organizes campus placement sessions as well as internship opportunities and inspiring Guest lectures delivered by alumni and eminent people from the academic and allied fields. You can bag teaching opportunities in Delhi, Gurugram, and Noida at government schools as well as at private schools. On checking out placements online, including at the official website and through student reviews, you will note that some schools like the Shiv Nadar School, Delhi Public School, and Heritage School have provided teaching opportunities to students of both colleges. The website of Miranda House also mentions students getting jobs at Kendriya Vidyalayas, MCD-recognized schools, schools of The Galaxy Education System (TGES), etc. Reviews of Lady Shri Ram College for Women mention placements at Aravali School, KR Mangalam Global School, etc.
As for pay packages, a fresher with a B.El.Ed. can surely expect at least a minimum of 25k per month. With a very good performance to show at the end of the course vis-à-vis not just academic scores but also creative assignments and innovative presentations, you may well bag 35k per month!
