New official work rules for international students in Australia - 2023
Author: Vandana Post Date: 07 Jul 2023 As long as you are studying abroad in Australia, you are permitted to work for not more than 48 hours during the course of two weeks. This directive from the Australian Govt.'s Dept. of Home Affairs has come into force from 1st July 2023. However, as per this directive, if you are on a student visa working in the field of healthcare for the aged as of 9th May 2023, then you will be allowed to work with no restrictions on the number of hours.
Another important and exciting news is for those keen to work after graduating from a college/university in Australia. The duration of post-study work rights of graduating international students has been extended from the current duration by a further two years on their Temporary Graduate Visa. Hurrah! Thus, as of 1st July 2023, if you hold a Bachelor's Degree from an Australian university, the duration of your work rights has been extended to 4 years (earlier it was only 2 years). In the case of holding a Master's Degree from an Australian university, the duration of your work rights has been extended to five years (earlier it was 3 years). In the case of a Doctoral Degree from an Australian university, your work rights have been extended to 6 years (earlier it was 4 years).
Note that in the case of a Bachelor's or a Master's Degree, this new directive is applicable only for select Degree programs, whereas, in the case of Doctoral Degrees, it is applicable to all doctoral programs.
Author: DR.N.V. Srinivasa Rao Post Date: 14 Jul 2023 The students who are studying in Australia with a study Visa were allowed to work for 40 hours per fortnight. But during the COVID pandemic, this restriction was removed and international students are allowed to work without any limit on working hours. From 1st July 2023, the Australian government brought back restrictions on working hours for international students with study visas. But this time the maximum limit was extended. Now officially any students studying in Australia can work up to 48 hours per fortnight. This rule is applicable to students who are already studying in Australia and also to the students who will be coming for their studies to Australia newly. The Australian government says this restriction is reintroduced only to see the quality of education will not suffer.
This restriction will not be applicable up to 31st Dec 2023 to the students who are presently working in the aged care sector.
Even though you are working part-time with a student Visa, you have to take a Tax File Number (TFN) and pay tax as applicable and returns should be filed.
Post-study work rights for international students were also revised. Foreign students who obtained bachelor's degrees from Australia in certain subjects can stay and work for 4 years. As of now, it is 2 years only but from 1st July 2023, this will become 4 years. Similarly, foreign students who obtained PG certificates in certain subjects from Australia can be allowed an extended stay of up to 5 years. Students who did their PhD in any subject from this country will be allowed to stay and work for up to 6 years with Student Visa.
