Author: Venkiteswaran Post Date: 09 May 2023 When we come to discuss the online courses of today, I have to say and remind you about the forerunners of the present online courses. At that time it was known as a correspondence course or postal tuition/coaching etc. It was during the sixties and seventies.
During those days post-SSC/SSLC education was in colleges and it was known as a Pre-Degree course, and even before that it was called Pre-university course. In those days colleges were very less and so seats also were very less. Due to the general weak financial conditions and necessity, most people, after passing the School Leaving exam and some adding Typing and Shorthand skills, took up whatever jobs came through. Later on, they all felt the need for higher education. Though big cities had evening colleges all couldn't join. Even those who completed the pre-degree or degree and wanted to go for higher education also faced difficulties with admission, fees, lack of nearby colleges etc. It was in that situation the idea of distance education was seriously taken up by the government. Thus a correspondence course was started in 1962 at Delhi University. Its success prompted many other universities to follow. The real game change occurred after the opening of Dr. Ambedkar Open University in 1982 by Andhra Pradesh and IGNOU in 1985. Rest is history. Correspondence courses or distance education and open Universities were a real blessing for thousands of people yearning for higher education. It helped many in their career path also.
E-learning was initiated in India by private entities. Most of them were short-duration certificate courses.
The real boost and authenticity for online education came during the COVID 19 lock down situation. There was all-around support, need, and encouragement for online education. The increasing capabilities of Smartphones and affordability also helped online education.
Now, except for some pure science courses, online education is available in almost all fields. M. Com, MA, MBA, MCA, etc. are the most popular and common online courses in Indian universities. There are several PG Diploma courses like PGDM (Management) and many new generation courses like Data science, Machine learning, cloud computing, Blockchain, etc. Listing all the India Universities and Institutes and the courses offered by them itself will be a daunting task due to the large numbers and choices. Prospective students can make general search on the net or visit the websites of major and established Universities to know more specific details.

Author: DR.N.V. Srinivasa Rao Post Date: 10 May 2023 Distance education was in existence for the last 50 to 60 years. During those days Private colleges are very less. PG courses were available in universities only and no private universities were existing. As the competition for seats in these universities was increasing, the government introduced the system of distance education.
Those days, the study material in the form of hard copies was sent to the students by post. The students used to study the material and a minimum number of contact classes were used to be conducted for interaction between the students and the faculty. I remember students answering assignments and sending those papers by post to the distance education centre of the university.
Many people who were unable to secure a seat in regular college or students who were unable to join the college due to financial problems used to join these courses. Now with the advent of the internet, these distance courses are starting online classes for students. Instead of sending the course material they upload the material to the website so that authorised students can download the papers and use them for their preparation.
But with the recent pandemic online education has become a necessity. Now the concept is increasing and more students are preferring online distance education. Now many PG courses are available in this mode. IGNOU is offering an M Sc course in distance mode. I know some people who did their PG in this mode from IGNOU while working after their B Sc.
There are many universities offering these online distance mode courses in many subjects including science courses also. The following are some such institutions 1. IGNOU 2. Annamalai University 3. Acharya Nagarjuna university 4. Andhra University 5. Jaipur National University 6. Amity University 7. Lovely Professional University 8. Jain University.
My sister did her MA Hindi and MA Sanskrit through distance online mode only. She did these courses after her retirement as a school teacher. So I feel it is a good option to carry out studies while working also through these distance online modes.
