Other than teaching what are the jobs available for M.Sc. Physics freshers?
Author: DR.N.V. Srinivasa Rao Post Date: 05 Nov 2023 M Sc Physics is a very promising qualification and there will be many opportunities in various areas.
A candidate with a PG qualification in Physics will have some good opportunities in the following areas-
1. Research laboratories: There are many research laboratories related to various branches of physics. National Physical Laboratories, Weather Forecasting Laboratories, Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Inter-University Centre of Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), National Centre of Radio Astronomy (NCRA), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), and Raman Research Institute (RRI) are some of such laboratories. There will be many scientist posts in these laboratories for M.Sc Physics candidates. In addition to scientist posts in these laboratories, there will be some research scholar vacancies also. These scholars will carry out research in various research projects undertaken by the scientists of the laboratories. Candidates who clear the NET examination will get CSIR/UGC fellowships as research scholars. They can opt to join one of these organisations as Research scholar under a guide and work for their PhD. Candidates working in these laboratories will have a chance to get a permanent job in the same lab and at the same time, they can get their PhD qualification also.
2. Atomic and space organizations: Many MSc Physics students will have jobs as scientists in these organisations. Indian Space Organisation, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Nuclear Fuel Complex, and Defence Research and Development Organisation, are some such institutes. These organisations provide career opportunities to PGs in Physics. At the same time, there will be many research openings in these organisations.
3. Manufacturing companies: There are many manufacturing companies producing various electronic goods, mechanical items and other hardware products. All such industries will have many openings in their production, quality control and R&D departments for M Sc physics candidates. All manufacturing industries will have some openings in their instrumentation area for these candidates.
5. General Jobs: Like any other graduate and Postgraduate, M Sc Physics candidates can apply for various general jobs like UPSC, Group I and Group II jobs in state government, Bank jobs and other administrative jobs in government and private organisations.
I feel that opting for a Physics PG course is a wise decision as there are multiple opportunities for them in addition to teaching posts.
Author: Sheo Shankar Jha Post Date: 05 Nov 2023 Physics is an interesting subject helping us to understand how the universe works and the fundamental laws governing the behaviour of the objects lying around us. Physics and Mathematics are interconnected in the sense that the laws derived by the scientists are expressed in terms of mathematical equations. This subject, ie Physics, improves the critical thinking of the physicists allowing them to understand the complexities of the different theories of the topics such as the Nuclear Physics, Light, Electricity, Heat, Magnetism, Hydrostatics, Electrostatics, Properties of matters and many more branches of Physics.
Hence the jobs for the M.Sc Physics freshers are abundant in the different areas other than teaching. The following are some of the fields that would offer the candidates a lot of opportunities for a bright future-
1) There are numerous opportunities available in the IT Companies such as the Wipro, TCS, Infosys, HCL etc where the candidates can secure their jobs with the help of the job consultants. The candidates should show their best performances during the process of the interviews so as to secure the jobs.
2) They can apply in the Scientific Research and the Development Organisations such as the Physical Laboratory Ahmedabad, Nuclear Science Centre New Delhi, Bhabha Atomic Research Mumbai etc provided they have secured not less than 65% marks in their final examinations. They need to clear both the the written tests and the oral ones prior to their final interviews of the employers.
3) The high percentage of M.Sc in Physics would enable the candidates to land a job in the NASA Organisation subject to the clearance of their final interviews with the employer.
4) The aspirants can also look for the jobs in the following organisations for their vacancies of the executive trainees/ management trainees- a) the Indian Oil Corporation b) Bharat Heavy Electrical c) NTPC d) ISRO e) SAIL f) DVC
5) If the candidates are interested for other competitive examinations such as the UPSC, State Civil Services, Probationary officers of the different banks such as the SBI, Canara Bank, ICICI, LIC Probationary Officers etc, they can apply. The candidates can clear the jobs of their chosen fields with their dedicated efforts.
