A Ph.D. personal interview is different from other types of interviews generally we attend for jobs. Here, two skills of the candidate will come in handy. The first one is communication. How effectively a candidate conveys his ideas and thoughts will be observed. The second skill is the subject knowledge. The question will vary from candidate to candidate and depend more on the field and subject he/she is going to work on for his/her PhD. Generally, the candidate has to make a presentation on the subject selected for the Ph.D.

I was a research guide and 5 students obtained their Ph.Ds. Two years back I attended a personal interview of a candidate. I was also one of the committee members. His topic of research was high-energy materials. He made a presentation. All the members of the committee asked questions raised out of his presentation only. The questions asked were
1. Why are some materials very sensitive?
2. What are the special instructions to be given to a student who is working on these high-energy materials?
3. Why are these materials called high-energy materials?

Some professors will go deep into the subject and ask questions. That is why preparation for an interview is very important.
