Since the applications to the Fellowship are open only once a year, you will need to wait till next year for the 2024 notification. Look out for advertisements in leading newspapers (the notification for this year's Fellowship was published in the first week of September), and check the UGC website regularly. Overview
The Savitribai Jyotirao Phule Fellowship for Single Girl Child (SJSGC) is named after India's first female educator and social reformer who worked for the empowerment of women. The Fellowship scheme is under the aegis of the Department of Higher Education, University Grants Commission (UGC). Under this scheme, a single girl child who has no siblings can apply for the Fellowship to pursue a Ph.D. program in India but should not be receiving any other Fellowship or scholarship from other sources, either private or of the Govt. A girl child who is one of a pair of twins or who is a fraternal daughter is also permitted to apply, provided that she does not have other siblings.
Specific eligibility requirements for the Savitribai Jyotirao Phule Fellowship for Single Girl Child are mentioned below- Age criterion: You should not be over 40 years of age as of the last date of submission of the online applications if applying for the Fellowship in the general category. If applying in the SC, ST, OBC, or PwD reserved category, you should not be over 45 years of age as of the last date of submission of the online applications.
Academic profile: You must be already enrolled in a regular, full-time Ph.D. program that is of a recognized educational institute/college/university. The institution should be a UGC-recognized Central/State University with a valid NAAC accreditation or a UGC-recognized Deemed-to-be University with a valid NAAC accreditation. You can also apply if enrolled for the Ph.D. in an institute that receives full financial support from the Central Govt. or a State govt and is authorized to award Degrees and also one that is recognized as an institution of National Importance.
The application for the Fellowship will not be accepted if the Ph.D. program is pursued in a part-time mode or through a distance education/open learning mode.
Bank account: The bank account into which the Fellowship award will be credited must be Aadhaar-linked and verified as is required by Govt. norms for Govt.-awarded Fellowships.
Good to know: The Ph.D. should be completed within 5 years, as of the 1st of April of the selection year or the actual date of joining under the fellowship in the educational institute/college/university, whichever is later. The amount awarded under the Fellowship will only be given up to the date of submission of the Ph.D. thesis or 5 years of tenure whichever is earlier. Strictly no extensions will be given.
SJSGC Award
Coming to the main aspect, namely, the financial aid disbursed under the SJSGC Fellowship Award, for Junior Research Fellows (JRFs) the amount is Rs. 31,000/- p.m. for the initial two years, while for Senior Research Fellows (SRFs) the amount is Rs. 35,000/- p.m. for the remaining tenure. This amount, though, is dependent on the satisfactory progress of the research work.
A Contingency Grant will also be awarded towards expenses for books, journals, etc. These and anything purchased with the contingency grant must be handed over to the institution where you are pursuing the Ph.D. at the end of the Ph.D. program's tenure (or termination or resignation, if applicable). The amount of the contingency grant is as follows- (i) For research work in Humanities and Social Sciences: Rs.10,000/- p.a. for the initial two years, and Rs. 20,500/- p.a. for the remaining tenure. (ii) For research work in Science, Engineering and Technology: Rs.12,000/- p.a. for the initial two years, and Rs.25,000/- p.a. for the remaining tenure.
In the case of Divyang applicants who require the service of an Escort Reader Assistance, in addition to the aforementioned funding, they will also receive Rs. 3,000/- p.m.
Applicants are advised to first go through the detailed guidelines at the UGC portal, including important information about hostel fees/HRA, medical and other types of leave, transfer of fellowship to another institution, etc. Applications should be submitted only in online mode at this same UGC portal.
Once it is confirmed that you are eligible for the Fellowship award, don't dither! You must join the Fellowship within three months from the date of issue of the Award letter, otherwise, the Fellowship award will be treated as cancelled. All the best!
