New Zealand is a country where one will find a world-class educational system. Even though there are limited universities, all of them are internationally recognised and are attracting students from various countries. Some of the universities in this country place a very high emphasis on research-oriented education. I was in this country for a brief duration in connection with my official work and I observed that the people are friendly and life in that country is very good. I understand that the education system in this country is oriented towards attracting foreign students. Many students from India are also studying here in this country.

The following are some of the important points that should be cleared before going there for their studies-
1. Before applying for a seat in a particular university, study well about that university. Visit their website and get all the details. If there are any doubts please contact the concerned officials of the university as per the contact details given on their website and get all your doubts cleared.
2. If you know any student who is presently studying in that country and any person who recently completed his studies in that country, talk to him and get all the details. That will give you a piece of first-hand information about that country, university, and other related matters.
3. Generally, many universities will have an association of foreign students. You can also talk to them to know more about the expenditure there and also find out various options to stay there.
4. Before taking a call, conduct good research about the costs involved in studies in a particular university. See whether the cost is within your reach. It is always good to have a budget and adhere to that.
5. Know what are the various options available to work part-time so that you will earn money and you can manage your expenses and support yourselves.
6. Estimate the cost if you stay in the hostel and also estimate the cost if you stay outside the campus and decide that suits you well.
7. Read some books that tell about the people and environment there in that country and make yourselves conversant with the environs there so that you will not find any difficulty in settling there once you reach there.
8. Pack all essential items and carry all necessary documents so that you do not search for items immediately after going there. If any medicines are required please carry them with you. You may require a prescription from a registered practitioner for carrying some medicines. All certificates and seat allotment letters, Visa and passport should be carried.

Be friendly with people but never familiarise yourselves with unknown people. Be selective in choosing friends.

I think that once you prepare well, and follow the tips given above, there will not be any issues in settling there and completing your studies with good scores.

New Zealand is one of the preferred study destinations for Indian students and as per one estimate about 30-35% of the total foreign students in New Zealand are Indian.

New Zealand is a developed nation and provides a good environment for foreign students to get the education of their choice and start their careers. There are hundreds of universities in New Zealand offering various courses to eligible students. It would be interesting to note that New Zealand also offers an open three-year post-study work visa to international students.

Indian students desirous of getting admission to an educational institute in New Zealand for pursuing their UG/PG course should keep the following things in mind-

1. Tuition Fee - A student should meticulously work out the financial resources required to complete education in New Zealand. The annual tuition fees range from Rs 5 to 16 lakhs depending on the type of course, with short-term diploma courses to full-fledged PG/PhD courses being offered, and the institution where the admission is taken.

2. Cost of Living - The cost of living in New Zealand is fairly the same across the country and is about Rs 6 to 8 lakhs per year.

3. Health Insurance - Students have to take health insurance at the beginning itself. No university will provide admission without this. The premium of this insurance is about Rs 15000 to 30000 per year.

4. Culture and Traditions of New Zealand - A student who is planning to take admission in one of the universities in New Zealand should get himself informed about the culture and traditions of that country as it will facilitate him to understand the environment there in a better way.

5. Climate - New Zealand has a subtropical to subantarctic climate zone and has mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and abundant sunshine during the year. The students going there for education keep these things in mind while packing their clothes and accessories etc for taking to New Zealand.
