Singapore is a small country and its size may be less than many states of our country. But it is a well-developed country and it has become a desired destination for many students for having quality higher education. We will find many international students in this country doing various technical and non-technical courses. There are around 16 universities and many government and private educational institutions in this country.

A student going there to study for the first time should understand the rules of the land well in advance and follow them from the first step of him on that land. So I advise a student to read about the rules that are to be followed in the country. Especially we Indians will not give much importance to traffic rules and rules related to hygienic conditions on the roads. But these issues will be viewed very seriously in this country.

Singapore is a very costly place and you may have to spend a lot of money on your accommodation itself. It is always advisable to opt for on-campus accommodation than offsite accommodation. If you are selecting an offsite accommodation take every detail and see if the expenditure will be within your budget. Many students prefer institutes where on-site accommodation is available.

A health insurance policy for the period of study is required. Many institutes insist on this. This is very important as the cost involved are very high in the medical field in this country.

During the first few days of your stay try to understand the world around you and learn how best we can manage in that atmosphere. Meet different people and attend different events so that you can network with more people. But be careful in selecting the people to talk to and get much-needed information.

Some part-time job opportunities are available and many universities allow their students to work up to 16 hours a week. But please note that you have to take permission from the university in which you are studying. Some institutes offer part-time jobs on the campus itself for their students.

Apply in advance for Visa or student pass. The student pass requirements will be different from institute to institute and you have to get full information and apply accordingly. You should have a letter from the university in which you are joining mentioning that a seat was allotted to you. Get this letter and apply at least two months before.

If any of your seniors or relatives are there in Singapore, contact them in advance and take their help in getting full information about the place where you are going to stay. This will help you in preparing well before you start living there.

For Indian Students, Singapore might tempt them for continuing their studies here since they might find this place conducive for higher studies due to the lucid ways of teaching of the professors. The other aspect is that the environment in Singapore is peaceful and safe to live in. However, the students need to be cautious in some of the areas which are enlisted below-
1) Students should desist from chewing gums - The students should keep this point in mind that Chewing Gums are banned in Singapore and if caught with the indulgence of such products, they are liable to be punished.
2) Throwing items here and there to be avoided- Offenders are heavily fined in case they are caught by police personnel throwing items like cigarette butts, empty bottles or cans, or other objectionable items on roads or public places. They might be fined heavily or even they might be produced before a court for such offences.
3) Smoking is banned- The students should relinquish smoking while living in Singapore since in case of being caught by law enforcement agencies with the indulgence of the Cigarette or Cigar smoking or consumption of other tobacco products would cost them heavily.
4) Urinating in unauthorised places- The students should give up the practice of urinating here and there while living in Singapore since the offenders are fined a hefty amount if caught.
Using toilets and not flushing the same properly would amount to a serious offence punishable according to their laws. Hence these aspects are to be taken care of during their stay in Singapore.
5) The students should always use pedestrian crossings - Crossing the roads at their will is highly objectionable according to the law of Singapore and hence they should always use the pedestrian-crossings in case of their requirements. Defaulters are punishable according to the prevailing law of Singapore.
