Author: Dhruv Post Date: 22 Jun 2023 The Land of the dawn-lit mountains, Arunachal Pradesh is the northeasternmost state in India. This is the state, which receives the day's first sunshine in India. A land full of mountains and rivers, the mighty Brahmaputra flowing through it, it is also the biggest amongst the seven sister states in the northeast. It shares a long international border with China, apart from Bhutan and Myanmar. With a difficult terrain, many of the regions in Arunachal Pradesh are difficult to reach. As a result, the state is thinly populated. To most people in India, it is one of the most distant and remotest places in the country.
However, things and perceptions are changing these days. In recent years, the state has seen several development activities, perhaps mainly due to its significance as an important front, in case of any future confrontation with China, which on and off, lays undue claim over the state. The central government is taking due care in building roads, bridges, communication networks and other useful infrastructure in the state. To keep the region populated and improve its prosperity index, the youth are being encouraged to study and work in the state itself. For this purpose, in the last decade, many higher education institutions have come up in the state. With increasing higher education opportunities, no more do students have to go far and wide in search of suitable colleges for studies in their respective fields of interest.
Arunachal Pradesh today has colleges for most fields, be it engineering, technology, architecture, medicine, nursing, law, or education. Several science, arts and commerce colleges have also come up over the years. However, most of these courses offered are at the undergraduate level. M.Tech, PhD and other higher education programs are offered by a few colleges only. I hope that with time, there will be more opportunities for postgraduate studies in the state itself.
Apart from the colleges, the state has several universities. There is one central university, one state university, seven private universities, one deemed and one open university, names of which are given below.
Arunachal University of Studies
Apex Professional University
Central Institute of Himalayan Cultural Studies
Himalayan University
Indira Gandhi Technological and Medical Sciences University
North East Frontier Technical University (NEFTU)
North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology
Rajiv Gandhi University
Venkateshwara Open University
Engineering education is one of the most popular fields of study in Arunachal Pradesh. In this respect, some of the top colleges in the engineering field are as follows.
National Institute of Technology (NIT), Arunachal Pradesh - The college needs no mention as it is the top engineering college in the state, where admission is through JOSSA counselling, with JEE Mains rank being the criteria for selection. The institute is one of the few offering courses up to the PhD level.
North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology - This is another top engineering college in the state located at Itanagar that offers courses up to the PhD level. Along with the degree courses, it has certificate and diploma courses on offer too.
Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Arunachal University of Studies - A department under the Arunachal University of Studies, degree courses up to the PhD level are available here along with diploma courses.
The state has a couple of polytechnics, namely the Rajiv Gandhi Government Polytechnic and Tomi Polytechnic College.
For architectural studies, the state has the lone Department of Architecture, under Indira Gandhi Technological and Medical Sciences University offering undergraduate courses in architecture.
Medical aspirants too have options to study medicine in the state. For MBBS studies, there is the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences, which is the first medical college in Arunachal Pradesh with 50 MBBS seats and a 300-bedded hospital. There is even a homoeopathy college, the North East Homeopathic Medical College, which offers the BHMS course in Homoeopathy. Faculty of Medical and Paramedical Sciences, under the Indira Gandhi Technological and Medical Sciences University, offers degree courses in Physiotherapy (BPT), B.Sc. (Radiology and Imaging Technology), and B.Sc. (Optometry). For nursing students, the best option is the IGTAMSU School of Nursing.
For law studies too there are three options in Arunachal Pradesh. These three colleges are the Faculty of Legal Studies under the Arunachal University of Studies Arunachal Law Academy, and finally the brand new Jarbom Gamlin Govt. Law College, established as recently as 2019.
As for science, arts and commerce colleges, offering B.A., B.Sc. and B.Com. degree there are several of them. Some popular ones are:
College of Horticulture & Forestry
Don Bosco College
Daying Ering College of Teacher's Education
Indira Gandhi Govt. College
St. Claret College
St. Francis De Sales College
Rang Frah Govt. College, and several more
Thus it can be seen that Arunachal Pradesh has a repertoire of colleges and courses on offer. No more do students have to leave en masse the boundaries of the state and study elsewhere. It is worth mentioning that I have a colleague here in Hyderabad, who is basically from Bihar and has done his engineering at the North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology in Arunachal Pradesh. He has very good memories of his stay at his alma mater. I too have been fortunate to visit the state, albeit as a tourist, while we were staying at Tezpur, a bordering town in Assam.
